You can plan bathroom worktop fitting in Norbiton from a floor plan, but the plan and the room have a habit of disagreeing once the tape comes out. Modest Victorian and Edwardian terraces with rear kitchens of about 2.4m by 3m, commonly opened into the dining room to give an L of 3m and 1.8m, alongside estate flats where the job is a straight replacement of a 2m run and upstands. Whatever is behind the doors, the sequence does not change: look, measure, draw, agree, cut, fit.
Chimney breasts are often taken out at ground level and left standing above, so the middle of the run is newer wall than the two ends of it. None of it changes the material, but it does decide whether the top comes out of offcut stock or wants a slab bought for it alone. A cloakroom top and an en-suite top are one job at two sizes.
Ceilings are high in these, so wall unit heights and splashback heights are open choices rather than things the room has already decided. The bathroom in one of these is usually a later addition over the back kitchen, so the walls are thinner, the floor moves and a vanity has to sit level in a room that is not. A bathroom over a kitchen has its waste run already decided.
On this patch the buildings are Victorian terrace, Edwardian terrace, 1960s and 1970s council estate and 2020s estate regeneration. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.
