The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. The whole slot, or the stone waits.

Variation past what packing can take up has to be corrected in the carcasses before we cut, because the template records the units as they stand. Units have to be fitted, fixed and level before templating, and it is better to hear that at the template than on the fitting day. A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. It adds an hour or two to the day, and that time sits in the schedule rather than being taken out of the finishing. A forced back edge cracks weeks later.

Upkeep is settled when the slab is chosen, since it belongs to the material rather than the fabrication. Granite tells you when the seal wants topping up: water stops beading on the surface and starts darkening it instead. Topping a seal up is a wipe-on job with a cloth. A maisonette puts the kitchen on one of two levels, so an internal staircase may be part of the route as well as the communal one. The stairwell half-landing is usually the tightest point on the whole route and it dictates the maximum piece. The building moved decades ago and the fit allows for it.

The template can be taken with the old top still down, which is why one visit covers both. What comes out goes by the same route the new stone comes in by, which is why that route is walked before anything is lifted. Carcasses stay. Surface changes. That is the whole of it. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. Camera enforcement does not take an explanation.

Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because the openings are machined rather than chopped out on the wall. A full-height piece shows a wall that is out more than an upstand does, over the extra height. The internal stair is usually a straight flight with a tight top landing, and it is the landing rather than the flight that is the limit. Fixings into concrete go in with proper anchors, and the dust is contained rather than swept up afterwards. Nothing is screwed into plasterboard and hoped for.
