A suspension is charged by the bay and by the day, so the number of metres asked for is worth getting right the first time. The flat entrance door and the internal doorways are usually tighter than the communal stairs, which is the opposite of what most people assume. The fall across the floor is in the cut list. A room can be out of square in both directions at once, so the wall that leans is also the wall that runs downhill, and one scribe cannot answer both. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Yield drops the moment the back edge stops being straight.

A step up off the pavement means the piece is lifted to the threshold before it is carried anywhere, and that first lift is the one that wants four hands. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. Once the cut-outs are machined there is no going back on it. Plenty of zones run at the weekend as well as through the week, so a Saturday date is not automatically the easier one to work. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. A long walk from the van earns heavier corner protection.

Not really, and claiming otherwise would cost nothing and mean nothing. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation and worktop replacement. It reflects the local housing rather than any difference in the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted here the same way it is anywhere else on the patch. Studio and one-bed conversions put the whole kitchen against a single wall, so the job is one run and everything depends on that one length. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Every flat cut off one drawing, errors included. A kitchen carved out of a larger room sits under whatever the original plan left behind, so the run frequently ends at a blocked doorway or a boxed-in service. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. The spares are cut while the slab is still open.

A full-depth tall unit projects past the worktop line, and the run has to be scribed against its side panel instead of carrying on past it. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. Undersides are polished where the piece is seen from below. Material alone is £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are never folded into that figure.

Plaster thickness varies over the height of a wall, so the line at worktop height is not the line at skirting level, and the units decide which one matters. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. Left and right alcove pieces are marked and stay marked. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. Whoever manages the block controls the lift booking, the bin store and the visitor parking, and none of that sits in the gift of the household whose kitchen it is. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. A verbal change is not an instruction.

Dark and heavily veined stone shows a join more than a pale even one, which is worth knowing before the slab is picked. Veining carries through a join where both pieces come off the same slab, which is decided at nesting. A finished join is typically two to three millimetres, colour-matched and sanded flush. Where the sink and the hob face each other across the aisle, everything carried between them crosses the walkway, and that is the one movement the shape cannot design out. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw.

Taking the old tops away is a line rather than an assumption, so it comes off if you do not want it. Every run, cut-out, edge, join and groove set is a line, which is what makes it comparable with anyone else’s. Two walls each a degree out give an internal corner two degrees out, and the whole of that error lands in the mitre. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. A relief that deep changes how the piece is lifted.

If you want the old top kept for a garage or a utility, say so and it stays on site. The units stay where they are and only the surface changes. What comes out goes by the same route the new stone comes in by, which is why that route is walked before anything is lifted. A permit covering the street is permission to park rather than a space reserved on it, and on a full street the difference is the whole morning. Where the carry is long the pieces are strapped for handling rather than for the shortest route off the tail lift. The frame is filled back to front when the bay is booked short.

Remnants bought elsewhere are the awkward case, because the drawing is then made to fit the stone. Templating, fabrication and fitting are the same three lines whether the stone came from us or from you. Conversions put kitchens where the services could be made to reach rather than where they belong, so runs are short and interrupted. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. One kept offcut saves a whole flat later.
