The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Nothing is cut before the signature comes back.

The same firm templates and fits. Nobody else is brought in to install. Upstands and splashbacks are templated after the worktop is down and settled, so they are a separate visit. The template produces a drawing, and the workshop cuts to that drawing once you agree it. Ground floors fall away towards the garden across the whole footprint, so the units are packed up long before anything is measured for stone. The workshop works to the template drawing and to the measured route, in that order. Real dimensions go on the cut list, not nominal ones.

If a piece cannot be got in at all, we say so at the template rather than on the day. A join forced by the route still sits over a gable, so it is no poorer a join for that. Where there is a lift, whether it can be booked out and padded matters as much as its size. A car will often hold more than its doors will admit, and it is the clear width between the door edges that a piece actually has to pass through. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. The saw never sees a length the hall will not take.

Order is what matters: a slab is templated before it is cut, so an uncut slab is straightforward and one already machined for another kitchen is not. Stone cut to somebody else’s drawing cannot usefully be re-cut to yours. A converted flat is measured off the original house, so no two units in the same building have quite the same kitchen run. Repeat pieces are cut from one drawing set, so what arrives on the bench is the same every time. Spares crated with the batch and labelled by unit.

A finished join is typically two to three millimetres, colour-matched and sanded flush. A mitred join at a corner is a different job from a butt join along a run, and they are not priced the same. A join cannot cross a cut-out, so a sink mid-run takes away the position you would have used. The two runs are rarely the same length, and the shorter one often carries the sink, which puts the cut-outs in the piece with the least material to spare. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. The return is nested first, because it fits worst.
