The kitchen was a service room at the back of the flat, so it is a long way from the front door along a corridor with two turns in it. The bench proves it before the van moves. A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. The measurement that decides everything is the diagonal between the underside of the flight above and the outer edge of the turn below it. One staircase can serve an owner on the first floor and a managed tenancy on the second, so the access arrangement changes at every landing while the building stays the same. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. A landlord repeating a kitchen gets the same detail cut.

The same firm templates and fits. Nobody else is brought in to install. A template on a normal kitchen takes two to three hours in the room. Upstands and splashbacks are templated after the worktop is down and settled, so they are a separate visit. The communal stair is stone with a cast iron balustrade, and the winders leave very little room to turn a long piece. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. The offcut is planned before the main piece is cut.

The alternative stands on the surface, so the choice is losing worktop permanently or only while you are draining. Which side of the bowl they go is about how you stand at the sink, and it is settled before cutting. Freeholder consent, a works agreement and proof of insurance are often wanted before a van is allowed to unload. Pieces are cut, mitred, machined and dry-assembled on the bench before anything is loaded onto a van. Two slabs get sequenced when one will not cover the run.

Where a top takes wine, oil and lemon most days, the non-porous materials ask least of the household. Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. Quartz and sintered stone never need sealing: quartz is non-porous and sintered stone has effectively zero porosity. Walls are solid brick with lime plaster and a hard skim over the top, and that skim comes away in sheets when old tiles are taken back. Ceilings are high and external walls are thick, so the run under the window sits in a deep reveal and the back edge has to be templated to the reveal rather than assumed square. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out.

Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the two pieces meet. If it is a decision for later, say so at the template: the match is a question about the batch. Tiling and stone can meet, but where they meet is decided before the template rather than after. Sash windows sit in deep reveals with a working box behind the lining, so a run dying into one has to clear more than the plaster. Pieces are cut deliberately shorter than the slab allows, because a colour-matched join beats a piece that will not turn onto a landing. Nested to the route first and the slab second.
