Worktop fabrication in Southgate
Your slab nested, cut to the template drawing, mitred, machined and dry-assembled on the bench before anything is loaded.
Southgate kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
These kitchens have usually been retiled twice and knocked through once, and both of those leave marks the worktop has to deal with. Pieces are cut, mitred, machined and dry-assembled on the bench before anything is loaded onto a van. Joins over gables, always.
Classic 1930s semis where the original kitchen and rear reception get knocked into one, producing a long L with a peninsula acting as the divider between cooking and eating.
The bay window in the back room limits how far the run can travel, so most jobs land at 3.2m plus a 1.6m peninsula. The residential streets off Chase Side and Bourne Hill are fine but slope enough to matter with a trolley. Southgate Circus is a busy roundabout with a one-way feed and short-stay bays only, so town-centre flats need an early slot. The 1930s stock has original quarry-tile or screed floors that are rarely flat across a 5m span - level the run end to end, not cabinet by cabinet.
These kitchens have been retiled at least twice, and stripping the tiles takes the bottom band of plaster with them because the old laminate ran underneath rather than up to them. Where a full length can come down the side and in at the back, the nest follows the slab instead of the building. Settled on the drawing, cut once.
The buildings themselves are mostly 1930s Metroland semi, art deco flat and 1960s block. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.
True everywhere
Worktop fabrication, in short
- Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
- Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
- A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
- Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.
Covered from the Watford patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
1930s and inter-war semis
The shape of the run
Peninsulas frequently land on a lightweight partition or on units that were never fixed down, and stone needs proper support under it before it goes on. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. Every join sits over a gable.

What gets asked for here
Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop installation come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

Getting stone into a Southgate kitchen
Southgate Circus is a busy roundabout with a one-way feed and short-stay bays only, so town-centre flats need an early slot. The residential streets off Chase Side and Bourne Hill are fine but slope enough to matter with a trolley.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop fabrication in Southgate
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Southgate, or just list it?
Yes. Southgate is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are N14. It is run from the Watford side, covering Hertfordshire & North London. A free-parking street with cars both sides can still leave the van forty metres away, and that distance is carry, not driving. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. That is the last thing settled before dispatch. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop fabrication in Southgate?
The chimney breast in the corner has usually been left in place, so the run gains a return and two scribed ends. Most of these have a side passage and a back door, so a full-length piece can usually reach the kitchen without being cut down, and the piece sizing is driven by the slab rather than the route. The bench proves it before the van moves. The 1930s stock has original quarry-tile or screed floors that are rarely flat across a 5m span - level the run end to end, not cabinet by cabinet.
Is access a problem in Southgate?
Southgate Circus is a busy roundabout with a one-way feed and short-stay bays only, so town-centre flats need an early slot. The residential streets off Chase Side and Bourne Hill are fine but slope enough to matter with a trolley. Door width, hall width and the diagonal at the turn are three separate measurements, and it is the diagonal that catches people out. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. It is settled on the bench, not on site. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.
Do you get much worktop fabrication work in Southgate?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop installation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Same slab run, or it is not a match. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Nested for the job in front of us.
What decides the price of a worktop in Southgate?
Because a peninsula is seen from both sides, the underside of any overhang gets the same edge treatment as the top, which is easy to leave out of a spec. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. The bench proves it before the van does. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
A junction between an original floor and a later extension slab is almost never at the same level, so units carrying a run across it need packing first. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. The drawing decides it, not the fitter. The peninsula end detail needs deciding up front - square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall - because a waterfall end has to be cut in sequence off the same part of the slab as the top. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Changes cost a piece, not a tweak.
