Beckenham kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Walls that are old, thick and rarely straight make dry-laying and scribing the bulk of the day. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. A single day, planned properly.
Split between family houses with side-return extensions running a 4m+ galley plus an island, and a large stock of converted flats in subdivided villas where the kitchen is a 2.4m run squeezed into a former bedroom or reception corner. Both ends of the market are busy.
A large villa has wide doors, a generous hall and somewhere to park, so the joins that go in are chosen for layout rather than forced by the route. Any island overhang past about 300mm will not carry weight on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or brackets have to be let into the units first, and that is agreed at template stage, not on fit day. Sound carcasses are the one condition.
What turns up on the job sheets is Victorian villa, Edwardian terrace, 1930s semi and converted flat. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
The research on this patch puts this at the top of the list, above worktop templating and worktop installation.

The building, and what it does to the job
In the flat conversions the staircase turn decides the maximum piece length, so we measure the stairwell at template stage and design the joint around it.
An island that is not fixed to the floor, is not level along its length, or has a breakfast-bar overhang with nothing supporting it.

Getting stone into the room
Controlled parking near the High Street and Beckenham Junction, permit-only side streets, and converted flats on upper floors reached by an original staircase with a tight half-landing.

The shape of the run
Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. The units stay, the surface changes.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Beckenham
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Beckenham, or just list it?
Yes. Beckenham is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are BR3. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Bromley. Without a bay the van ends up on a single yellow with a crew member watching it, which takes a pair of hands off the carry. We stage the strip-out so the old tops leave in one trip rather than trickling out across the afternoon. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop replacement in Beckenham?
A large villa has wide doors, a generous hall and somewhere to park, so the joins that go in are chosen for layout rather than forced by the route. The old island top is frequently sitting on units that were never fixed down, which is fine for laminate and not for stone. Units kept, surface changed, one day. In the flat conversions the staircase turn decides the maximum piece length, so we measure the stairwell at template stage and design the joint around it.
Is access a problem in Beckenham?
Controlled parking near the High Street and Beckenham Junction, permit-only side streets, and converted flats on upper floors reached by an original staircase with a tight half-landing. Stone goes up on edge, and it is the half-landing turn rather than the flight itself that sets the maximum piece. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. The strip-out is planned around it.
Is worktop replacement the job you do most in Beckenham?
Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop templating and worktop installation. Conversions put kitchens where the services could be made to reach rather than where they belong, so runs are short and interrupted. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. Sound carcasses or it does not go ahead. In a converted house the flat entrance and the internal doorway are usually tighter than the communal stairs, and that is easy to overlook. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project.
What decides the price of a worktop in Beckenham?
Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. Carcasses have to be sound first. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
Alcove pieces get cut oversize on both scribe edges, with the true wall angles carried on the template drawing rather than assumed. This is the commonest reason a replacement turns out to need more than a straight swap. The laminate has been covering it up. Have a fitter or joiner fix and level the island units beforehand, and get the sink, taps, hob and any range on site before templating so we cut to the actual appliances. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. If the carcasses are tired the honest answer is that stone will find that out, and it is better said before than after. Units kept, surface changed.
