The fitting itself is one visit: a plain run is a morning, an island with splashbacks takes most of the day. If the units run late the template moves, not the fit: the gap between them is fabrication. No money changes hands before the template. Original quarry tile is often still down under two or three later floor coverings, which is why the finished floor height is rarely what anyone expects. The workshop works to the template drawing and to the measured route, in that order. The awkward corner is cut first, while the slab is whole.

A remake goes back through the same cutting and polishing, so it is a return visit rather than a patch. Stone cannot be filled and made good the way laminate can, so a damaged piece is remade rather than patched. Door frames and the stair route are protected too, since most contact happens on the way in. A hall that widens further in is still only as good as its tightest point, and that point is usually within a metre of the front door. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. Load order is set by the order the pieces will be carried.

On a replacement the old top comes off in the morning and the new stone is down and sealed the same day. Take the old tops off yourself if you would rather, and the quote simply carries one line fewer. The units stay where they are and only the surface changes. The maximum piece length is fixed at drawing stage and every join is placed over a cabinet gable from there. A lift diagonal is a workshop dimension as much as a site one.
