Long straight residential roads with permit bays and some crossovers, so you can generally get a van reasonably close, but side alleys between the houses are gated and often too narrow to pass a 700mm slab on the flat. Where there is no side access the piece comes through the front door and the hallway dogleg. A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. That is why the fitting line on a quote reflects manpower and time rather than square metres. It appears as its own line rather than buried in a rate.

On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. Each run is priced on its own line against the supply rate, with the join count and the reason for each join stated. Shape first, area second. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. This is the item most often left out of a cheaper quote, and it comes back as a variation once the templater has been. Better on the quote than in a variation. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation.
