A boiling tap needs a hole of its own and a cupboard below for the tank, so the units change too. The tap hole is drilled in the workshop too, and its position depends on how far the tap has to swing. A tap under a window board still needs room for its handle to lift, which is checked at the template. Older houses put the boiler or the meter on one of the two walls, and whatever is boxed in around it sets the point where that run has to stop. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. Appliance gaps are checked against the new thickness.

No maintenance visit is built into the job. Soap, water, and on the porous stones a seal. Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. Topping a seal up is a wipe-on job with a cloth. Ceilings sit at about two point three metres and the head of the window is close under them, so a unit over the window has very little wall to hold onto. Plaster bonded straight onto concrete comes away with the bottom course of tiles, leaving a band behind the upstand. The fabric gets checked while it is open.

Stone cut to somebody else’s drawing cannot usefully be re-cut to yours. Remnants bought elsewhere are the awkward case, because the drawing is then made to fit the stone. The person choosing the worktop is not the person using it, and that shifts the balance from appearance towards running cost. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. One flat out of use at a time.
