Where a road is shut for filming or for works the diversion adds distance to the carry even when parking itself was never the problem. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. What comes off first is settled before the doors shut. Nothing needs visiting and nothing needs collecting: the template is in your kitchen and so is the fit.

The front rooms sit over the shop window with a structural beam beneath them, and the floor either side of that beam is not at one level. These have a back door straight into the kitchen so getting pieces in is rarely the issue, but the room is small and the runs are short, which puts the sink, hob and tap cut-outs close together on a single length of stone. The bench proves it before the van moves. Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Radius first, polish second, joins nowhere near.

The measurement that decides everything is the diagonal between the underside of the flight above and the outer edge of the turn below it. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. An access join is dressed to the same standard as any other. Streets near a ground or a venue have restrictions that come and go with the fixture list rather than with the time of day. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. The load sheet carries the parking note with it.

Not to any real extent, and it would be easy to imply it was. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement and worktop installation. The person choosing the worktop is not the person using it, and that shifts the balance from appearance towards running cost. Material sits between £110 and £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted line by line.

Anything that has to stay accessible, a stopcock, a gas meter, a riser panel, is marked on the template so the stone is cut around it instead of over it. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. A notch and a cut-out never share the same span. Final appliance positions and the actual sink and hob need to be settled before machining, because on a run this short a few centimetres of movement decides whether the piece can be cut in one. Quartz is the sensible default in a rental: nothing to seal, nothing to maintain, and nothing an incoming tenant needs briefing on. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Recut time comes out of the access window.

The alternative to a join is a shorter run, which is usually the wrong thing to trade away. Every piece goes in by hand and stone does not bend, so the tightest turn on the route sets the longest piece. Doorways, the newel post and the handrail usually take the room away, rather than the stairs themselves. There is no leaning a piece against a wall halfway up, so any flight longer than a dozen treads is planned around a rest point on a landing. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. The longest piece is capped in the workshop, deliberately.

Quartz and sintered stone never need sealing: quartz is non-porous and sintered stone has effectively zero porosity. Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. Rear access over a flat roof or up an external stair exists in some of these, and it is worth checking before the front stair is assumed. The bench work is about keeping enough solid material between them - a hob cut-out too near a sink cut-out leaves a narrow bridge that will not survive being lifted, so we either move the appliance positions on the template or split the run and put a join over a gable between the two cut-outs. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out.

Old laminate is light and awkward rather than heavy, so it is usually the easier half of the day. Taking the old tops off and disposing of them is its own line on the quote rather than something folded into the stone price. The units are untouched. Only the top of them changes. On an event day the controls are wider, tighter and enforced harder than the signage suggests on any other morning of the week. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. Straps and battens are chosen for lifting, not just for transit.

Remnants bought elsewhere are the awkward case, because the drawing is then made to fit the stone. Sinks, taps and hobs are yours to buy in any case, and they only have to be in the room for the template. Landlord work is scheduled around void periods, so the whole thing is a fixed window and the template date matters as much as the fitting date. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. A batch split across two weeks stops being a batch.
