Kennington kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. Sink and hob seated and sealed before we go.
Georgian and early Victorian houses have their kitchens at lower-ground level in what were service rooms, so runs follow the original room proportions with a small island or a central table rather than a big open plan. Estate flats nearby have compact separate kitchens with fixed service positions.
Much of the Georgian stock is listed or in a conservation area with a lower-ground entrance down railed area steps that turn sharply at the bottom. Parking is permit-controlled and the northern edge falls close to the congestion charge boundary, so charges need checking by street.
Listing and conservation conditions apply to a good number of these, which constrains what can be altered around the kitchen rather than what goes on top of the units. The day is planned backwards from the hall, and the scribing takes longer than the carry. The slow parts are slow for a reason.
What turns up on the job sheets is Georgian terrace, Early Victorian terrace, Interwar and postwar estate block and Mansion flat. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered on our south London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room
A controlled parking zone means either a visitor permit sorted in advance or a suspended bay, and a suspension is applied for days ahead rather than on the morning. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. We would rather ask than guess.

What gets asked for here
This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop templating. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

The building, and what it does to the job
Lower-ground rooms in this stock are damp-prone and rarely flat, so the run needs packing and the floor level checked at both ends before any long piece is cut.

Getting stone into a Kennington kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop installation in Kennington
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Kennington on your patch?
Yes. Kennington is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE11. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Lambeth. A controlled parking zone means either a visitor permit sorted in advance or a suspended bay, and a suspension is applied for days ahead rather than on the morning. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. We would rather ask than guess. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop installation in Kennington be any different from anywhere else?
Georgian houses put the kitchen in a basement or a rear closet wing, and the stairs down to it are the tightest part of the whole route. The day is planned backwards from the hall, and the scribing takes longer than the carry. That is the shape of the day. Lower-ground rooms in this stock are damp-prone and rarely flat, so the run needs packing and the floor level checked at both ends before any long piece is cut.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Kennington?
Much of the Georgian stock is listed or in a conservation area with a lower-ground entrance down railed area steps that turn sharply at the bottom. Parking is permit-controlled and the northern edge falls close to the congestion charge boundary, so charges need checking by street. Door width, hall width and the diagonal at the turn are three separate measurements, and it is the diagonal that catches people out. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. It gets checked before the first piece is lifted.
Is worktop installation common in Kennington?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. Sealed before we leave.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. A layout that has been packed and levelled run by run instead of to one datum shows as a step where two pieces meet. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Kennington?
Level has to hold across the whole room rather than along one wall, or a floor that falls end to end shows as a step where two pieces meet. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. It is the slow part of the day and it should be. Clear the full hall and stairs route of furniture, bikes, coats and stair-gates, and keep the front door propped and unobstructed for the carry. Where a landlord or housing provider is involved there is a specification to meet and a process to follow, and both are settled before a date is offered. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. Protection goes down first.
