Manor House kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Nothing in a house of this age is square, and the kitchen is usually the part that has been altered most often. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. Same slab run, same day, same batch.
Appliance positions are effectively fixed here, so template around the existing hob and sink footprints rather than assuming they can be shifted along the run. The Victorian terraces on the side streets give occasional rear-addition kitchens with a bit more length to work with. Mostly flats with compact fixed kitchens of 2.4-2.8m and appliances already in position, so replacement runs and upstands are the bread and butter.
The addition wall is half a brick thick in places and has usually had a damp course injected and been re-plastered, which leaves it neither flat nor consistent. Where a client wants a full-height piece behind the hob, it usually sits in the old chimney recess, and that recess is rarely square top to bottom or side to side, so it has to be templated as a trapezium rather than a rectangle. Decided before fabrication starts.
The mix here is post-war estate block, Victorian terrace, 1930s block and new-build apartment. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.
True everywhere
Splashbacks and upstands, in short
- Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
- Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
- Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
- The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.
Covered on our east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room
Sitting on a major junction with red route sections and no stopping, so loading goes to the residential streets behind. The older blocks are walk-ups while the newer ones have lifts that need booking through the managing agent.
A car that takes 2.4m on the diagonal will not take a three-metre worktop however it is stood, and there is no trimming it on the landing. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. It decides panel size before anything is cut.

What gets asked for here
This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop replacement. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Manor House
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Manor House?
Yes. Manor House is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are N4. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Hackney. Where the frontage is a clearway the unload happens away from the door and the carry gets longer, which is a crew and time question rather than a stone one. Panels come off the van in one trip where possible, since a tall piece handled repeatedly is a piece asking to be chipped. One trip is always better than three. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Manor House change how worktop splashbacks & upstands works?
Where the side return has been filled in, the old external wall is now an internal one and still carries its render, its gutter line and its old fixings. Lath-and-plaster on the party wall and the chimney breast returns almost never runs true, so a 100mm upstand bedded on silicone is the honest answer here, it rides the bow and hides the junction the worktop can never close on its own. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure. Appliance positions are effectively fixed here, so template around the existing hob and sink footprints rather than assuming they can be shifted along the run.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Manor House?
Sitting on a major junction with red route sections and no stopping, so loading goes to the residential streets behind. The older blocks are walk-ups while the newer ones have lifts that need booking through the managing agent. The lift has to be booked and blanketed before anything moves, and that booking needs to cover the old tops coming out as well as the new stone going in. It is usually the full-height panels rather than the tops that will not make the turn, and that only shows up when they arrive. Joint positions follow from that.
Do you do much worktop splashbacks & upstands around Manor House?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Developer-fitted kitchens come with thin cam-lock carcasses, which are fine under laminate and want bracing before stone goes on them. Splashbacks and upstands are cut from the same slab run at the same time, which is the only way the batch actually matches. Sockets final before template. Housings and integrated appliances are set out for a 38mm laminate top, so dropping to 20mm or 30mm stone changes the clearances and needs checking before anything is cut. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Siliconed to the worktop, never grouted.
Why do two Manor House kitchens the same size price differently?
A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. Upstands follow the run exactly, so every internal and external corner is a separate mitred or butted piece. Joint placement is a decision, not an accident. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. It is usually what pushes a job towards a 100mm upstand instead of a full-height panel, because an upstand rides what a panel exposes. Scribed, dubbed out, or set proud. Pick one. The chimney breast recess must be replastered and fully dry, and the hob and extractor positions fixed, before anyone templates a full-height piece into it. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. Splashbacks are cut from the same slab run as the tops, so they have to be decided before fabrication, not after. Same slab run as the tops.
