Seething Wells kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Lath and plaster, a settled floor and a hall with a turn in it are the three things that decide how this job runs. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the job is a day, and what makes it a difficult day is the building. A single day, planned properly.
The river frontage limits approach to one road, and the converted works have gated courtyards, shared stairs and only a handful of visitor bays, so unloading is often 30 to 40 metres from the flat door. Converted waterworks and filter-house apartments with unusual plans - tall windows, exposed brick and steel, and kitchens set as an island-plus-run in a wide open space, alongside plain Victorian terraces along the Portsmouth Road with small rear kitchens.
Lease conditions and the other flats in the building decide when noisy work can happen, so the fitting day has a start and a finish that are not ours to set. Lath-and-plaster and bowed brickwork mean we template for scribes rather than straight cuts, and each piece is offered up and eased in rather than dropped straight down. What is under the old top is the real question.
The buildings themselves are mostly Victorian terrace, Victorian waterworks conversion and 1990s riverside flats. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our south west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The shape of the run
On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. Carcasses have to be sound first.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
The building, and what it does to the job
Conversion flats have tall ceilings but narrow original door openings, so the width of a slab on the trolley is what catches you out, not the height.
Floors and walls that have settled towards the back addition, so the existing run is out of level and the stone will show it the moment it is set and levelled properly.

Getting stone into a Seething Wells kitchen
The river frontage limits approach to one road, and the converted works have gated courtyards, shared stairs and only a handful of visitor bays, so unloading is often 30 to 40 metres from the flat door.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

From template to fitted, working days from template. The same on this patch as every other.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Seething Wells
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Seething Wells?
Yes. Seething Wells is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are KT6. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Kingston upon Thames. Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Seething Wells change how worktop replacement works?
Lease conditions and the other flats in the building decide when noisy work can happen, so the fitting day has a start and a finish that are not ours to set. Lath-and-plaster and bowed brickwork mean we template for scribes rather than straight cuts, and each piece is offered up and eased in rather than dropped straight down. Sound carcasses are the one condition. Conversion flats have tall ceilings but narrow original door openings, so the width of a slab on the trolley is what catches you out, not the height.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Seething Wells?
The river frontage limits approach to one road, and the converted works have gated courtyards, shared stairs and only a handful of visitor bays, so unloading is often 30 to 40 metres from the flat door. Where the parking court sits behind the block the carry crosses open ground and gets boarded, because loaded trolleys and block paving do not agree. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. It sets what the day actually looks like.
Do you do much worktop replacement around Seething Wells?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Conversions put kitchens where the services could be made to reach rather than where they belong, so runs are short and interrupted. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A plumber either side of us. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A day, not a project.
Why do two Seething Wells kitchens the same size price differently?
Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Exposed structure means the back edge is not a straight line at all, and a scribe of fifteen or twenty millimetres across a run is normal. We would rather find it at template than on the morning, which is why the templater looks behind the units. The laminate has been covering it up. Have a plumber booked to disconnect the sink, tap and waste first thing and reconnect after we have gone, and clear the hallway and stairs completely so we can carry slabs through the house. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. A plumber disconnects before we arrive and reconnects after we leave, and that is worth booking early. Plumber either side of us.
