Worktop replacement in Stepney
Taking out a tired laminate worktop and fitting stone on the units you already have, in a single day.
Stepney kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Small, roughly square kitchens with a back door and a window in the middle of the run: short lengths, few joins, and a lot to work around. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. Stone is far heavier than what is coming off.
Estate flats have kitchens designed as separate rooms, typically 2.2m to 2.8m in an L with the boiler cupboard eating one corner and no room for a peninsula. Where houses have been reconfigured the kitchen moves to the rear with a modest island of around 1.8m.
Low-rise deck housing means walking the slab along a raised walkway with a step up at the door threshold.
The window sits in the middle of the run over the sink, and its board and cill set the limit on how tall an upstand can be. Chipboard carcasses under the sink swollen from a slow leak will not take stone and get replaced before fit day. What is under the old top is the real question.
What turns up on the job sheets is large post-war estate, 1970s low-rise deck-access housing, surviving Victorian terrace and recent estate-renewal block. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered from the Essex patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room
Vehicle access is through estate roads with speed tables, resident-only bays and bollarded pedestrian links, so a route survey saves a long carry.
Permit hours are what matters, not the permit itself, because a bay that frees up at six in the evening is no use for a template at ten. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. It is a full day at the kerb, not a delivery.

What gets asked for here
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop templating comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

The building, and what it does to the job
Original estate kitchens are frequently out of square where partitions were built off timber studs, so scribes matter more here than anywhere else in the borough.

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Stepney?
Yes. Stepney is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E1. It is run from the Essex side, covering Essex & East London. Permit hours are what matters, not the permit itself, because a bay that frees up at six in the evening is no use for a template at ten. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Stepney change how worktop replacement works?
Base units from the seventies and eighties are often only 500mm deep, so a 600mm stone top overhangs at the front and the doors want checking against it. Post-war terraces have small, roughly square kitchens with a back door and a window in the middle of the run, so runs are short and joins are rare, but there are usually two corners and a window cill to work around in a couple of metres. Units kept, surface changed, one day. Original estate kitchens are frequently out of square where partitions were built off timber studs, so scribes matter more here than anywhere else in the borough.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Stepney?
Vehicle access is through estate roads with speed tables, resident-only bays and bollarded pedestrian links, so a route survey saves a long carry. Low-rise deck housing means walking the slab along a raised walkway with a step up at the door threshold. Carrying through the house means protecting the whole route first: floor boarded, banister padded, and the front door held open on a wedge rather than by hand. With no room to turn, the old top gets cut up in the kitchen instead, which is dusty work and needs the room emptied first. That is agreed before a plumber is booked. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.
Is worktop replacement common in Stepney?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. Sound carcasses or it does not go ahead. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project.
Why do two Stepney kitchens the same size price differently?
The return piece is the awkward one on a slab: short, full depth, and rarely nesting neatly against the long lengths, so yield rather than area is what moves the material figure. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. Height change is checked before we cut. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
The stone carries the scribe because the wall cannot be persuaded, so back edges are cut oversize and eased in rather than dropped straight down. This is the commonest reason a replacement turns out to need more than a straight swap. The laminate has been covering it up. Empty the base units completely and have a plumber disconnect the sink, tap and any washing machine plumbed in under the worktop before we arrive. Where a landlord or housing provider is involved there is a specification to meet and a process to follow, and both are settled before a date is offered. A replacement keeps the units and changes the surface, which is the least disruptive way to do this in an occupied property. Sound carcasses are the condition.
