Worktop replacement in Sudbury Hill

Taking out a tired laminate worktop and fitting stone on the units you already have, in a single day.

Sudbury Hill kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Edwardian villa1930s semi1970s townhouse

Wide doors, generous rooms and somewhere to park mean the joins that go in are the ones we choose, not the ones the building forces. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. Stone is far heavier than what is coming off.

That produces an L-shaped kitchen with a step or a threshold in the middle of the floor and a shorter main run than the flat districts nearby.

Mixed older villas and interwar semis on the slope, where kitchens are commonly extended sideways into a garage rather than out into the garden because plots are narrow and steep.

A townhouse is tall and narrow with the kitchen at the bottom, so every piece goes down a staircase rather than along a hall. These are the multi-piece jobs: long runs, a large island and often a range cooker that cannot be moved, so the stone is templated in several pieces and how the vein runs across the joins matters. What is under the old top is the real question.

What we are usually templating in is Edwardian villa, 1930s semi and 1970s townhouse. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.

True everywhere

Worktop replacement, in short

  • The units stay. Only the surface changes.
  • Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
  • A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
  • The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.

Covered from the Watford patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop installation. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

Getting stone into the room

The hill is the defining feature: sloping and stepped driveways, retaining walls and front doors above street level, with parking further from the door than the map suggests.

Door width, hall width and the diagonal at the turn are three separate measurements, and it is the diagonal that catches people out. With no room to turn, the old top gets cut up in the kitchen instead, which is dusty work and needs the room emptied first. It sets what the day actually looks like.

The building, and what it does to the job

Where a garage has been absorbed, the floor slab is usually lower than the house, so verify the finished unit height on both sides before cutting a continuous top.

Questions

Worktop replacement in Sudbury Hill

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in Sudbury Hill, or just list it?

Yes. Sudbury Hill is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA1, HA2. It is run from the Watford side, covering Hertfordshire & North London. Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. It is a full day at the kerb, not a delivery. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about worktop replacement in Sudbury Hill?

The stair to the lower ground floor has a turn at the bottom and a low soffit above it, and both are measured before anything is nested. The old island top is frequently sitting on units that were never fixed down, which is fine for laminate and not for stone. Sound carcasses are the one condition. Where a garage has been absorbed, the floor slab is usually lower than the house, so verify the finished unit height on both sides before cutting a continuous top.

Is access a problem in Sudbury Hill?

The hill is the defining feature: sloping and stepped driveways, retaining walls and front doors above street level, with parking further from the door than the map suggests. Door width, hall width and the diagonal at the turn are three separate measurements, and it is the diagonal that catches people out. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. That is agreed before a plumber is booked. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is worktop replacement common in Sudbury Hill?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop installation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project.

What decides the price of a worktop in Sudbury Hill?

An L can be mitred at the corner for a continuous look or butt-jointed over the gable, and the two are different money and different risk. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What do I need to sort out first?

Where a breast interrupts a long wall the join can often go there, so it reads as a natural break rather than a line in the middle of a worktop. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. Found at template, not on fit day. Have a fitter or joiner fix and level the island units beforehand, and get the sink, taps, hob and any range on site before templating so we cut to the actual appliances. An owner living in the house makes the decisions and lives with them, so the specification tends to go towards the material rather than towards the lowest total. A replacement keeps the units and changes the surface, which is the least disruptive way to do this in an occupied property. Plumber either side of us.
