Yes. Tollington is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are N4, N7. It is worked on our north London run, along with the rest of Islington. Some zones are controlled for a short window in the middle of the day and open either side of it, which makes the timing of the visit the whole question. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. Packing takes its cue from the distance to the door. We come to the kitchen to template and again to fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Nested to the route first and the slab second. A room can be out of square in both directions at once, so the wall that leans is also the wall that runs downhill, and one scribe cannot answer both. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Upstands leave the bench in lengths, not as one run.

Where the turn inside is tight the piece gets turned on the path and brought in already on edge, which needs room in front of the door as well as behind it. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. A piece is cut to the turn it has to clear. A suspension only works if the cones and the notice are actually there on the morning, and now and then a car is sitting in the bay regardless. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. What comes off first is settled before the doors shut.

No, not particularly, and it would be easy to say otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation and worktop replacement. That is the local housing talking rather than anything about the job. It is priced, cut and fitted no differently here than anywhere else we cover. Shared-house kitchens take heavier use from more people than a family kitchen does, and the surface gets chosen on that basis rather than on looks. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. The annexe top comes off the main kitchen slab. Where a single building holds several small kitchens, the work arrives as one job rather than four, and it should be cut off the same slab run so the batches genuinely match. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Small kitchens are more bench work per square metre.

An L can be mitred at the corner for a continuous look or butt-jointed over the gable, and the two are different money and different risk. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. Short pieces cost bench time, not slab area. The supply-only figure for material runs £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are lines of their own.

Plaster thickness varies over the height of a wall, so the line at worktop height is not the line at skirting level, and the units decide which one matters. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. Radius first, polish second, joins nowhere near. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. Flats bought out of managed stock keep the original kitchen dimensions long after the ownership changed, so the layout says very little about who is paying for the work. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Changes cost a piece, not a tweak.

The edge profile is its own line, so a shaped edge and a square one are two different figures. Cut-outs, edge profile and join count are itemised, so taking one out removes a line rather than starting an argument. What is quoted is what the drawing says, and the figure does not move unless the drawing does. Two walls each a degree out give an internal corner two degrees out, and the whole of that error lands in the mitre. The workshop cuts to the plotted line rather than to a nominal dimension, which is why a scribe edge leaves the bench deliberately oversize. A notch and a cut-out never share the same span.

Grooves are machined into the surface rather than applied to it, so there is nothing to come loose later. Machining is permanent. If a later kitchen moves the sink, the grooves stay where they were cut. Suspended timber floors flex underfoot, and anything that moves beneath a unit shows up later as a lipped join. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. The slab is laid out around the awkward piece.

Stone cut to somebody else’s drawing cannot usefully be re-cut to yours. Thickness has to be known before quoting, since it decides the edge, the cut-outs and what the units carry. Say what you have and where it came from before anything is booked, because thickness and batch decide what can be done with it. Small kitchens in a shared house are all short runs and tight cut-out spacing, which is more bench work per square metre than one large kitchen would be. Repeat pieces are cut from one drawing set, so what arrives on the bench is the same every time. Cut for the slot, because the slot will not move.

An upstand is a slim strip that follows the worktop up the wall; a full-height splashback runs from the worktop to the underside of the wall units. A full-height piece shows a wall that is out more than an upstand does, over the extra height. Ceilings are high in these, so wall unit heights and splashback heights are open choices rather than things the room has already decided. Pieces are sized to the tightest turn on the route before anything is nested to the slab. The saw follows the template, never the plan.
