Wembley Central kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Victorian bay-fronted terrace1930s semi1960s low-rise flat2010s infill block

The kitchen normally sits in the back addition or a later side return, which puts the run against the oldest and least straight wall in the building. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. Stone is far heavier than what is coming off.

Mostly rear kitchens in narrow terraces and interwar semis, many opened into the old dining room so the run turns an L along two walls.

Match-day and event traffic management around the stadium closes and diverts roads at short notice, so a morning slot is safer than an afternoon one. Multi-generation households here cook heavily, so we get asked for a second hob or a separate wet-prep sink far more than for an island, and full-height splashbacks behind a wok burner are routine.

Cottage terraces have no hall to speak of and the front door opens almost straight into the room, which makes the carry easier and the protection harder. What the old top has been hiding is usually a floor that settled towards the back and units that were never fixed back to the wall. Units kept, surface changed, one day.

The mix here is Victorian bay-fronted terrace, 1930s semi, 1960s low-rise flat and 2010s infill block. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop replacement, in short

  • The units stay. Only the surface changes.
  • Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
  • A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
  • The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.

Covered on our north west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The shape of the run

Where the return runs into a wall that is out of square, the corner is templated as the angle it really is rather than as ninety degrees. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. The units stay, the surface changes.

What gets asked for here

Of everything we do around here, this is the one that comes up most, with worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands behind it.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The building, and what it does to the job

Half these houses have had the kitchen moved at least once, so the walls behind the old units are rarely square and the templater should expect to scribe the back edge rather than trust the plaster.

Getting stone into the room

Terraced streets off the High Road are permit-controlled with no driveway on the older stock, so a 3m slab usually comes off the van at the kerb and goes in through the front door and down the hall.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop replacement in Wembley Central

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Wembley Central?

Yes. Wembley Central is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA9, HA0. It is worked on our north west London run, along with the rest of Brent. A controlled parking zone means either a visitor permit sorted in advance or a suspended bay, and a suspension is applied for days ahead rather than on the morning. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. The waste run is planned, not improvised. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Wembley Central change how worktop replacement works?

Half these houses have had the kitchen moved at least once, so the walls behind the old units are rarely square and the templater should expect to scribe the back edge rather than trust the plaster.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Wembley Central?

Terraced streets off the High Road are permit-controlled with no driveway on the older stock, so a 3m slab usually comes off the van at the kerb and goes in through the front door and down the hall. Match-day and event traffic management around the stadium closes and diverts roads at short notice, so a morning slot is safer than an afternoon one. Door width, hall width and the diagonal at the turn are three separate measurements, and it is the diagonal that catches people out. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. That is agreed before a plumber is booked.

Is Wembley Central mostly worktop replacement work for you?

Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. Where an annexe has been built or converted, its floor and its walls are newer than the main house and behave differently under the same run. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A day, not a project. Extended households run kitchens hard, and that pushes the specification towards granite or sintered stone rather than a light quartz. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project.

Why do two Wembley Central kitchens the same size price differently?

Two runs meeting at an internal corner is the most common shape we fit, and the corner is where the decisions are. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

The stone carries the scribe because the wall cannot be persuaded, so back edges are cut oversize and eased in rather than dropped straight down. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. It is the usual surprise, and it is a known one. Have a plumber booked to disconnect the sink, tap and waste first thing and reconnect after we have gone, and clear the hallway and stairs completely so we can carry slabs through the house. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. A replacement keeps the units and changes the surface, which is the least disruptive way to do this in an occupied property. Units kept, surface changed.
