Canada Water kitchens

The buildings and streets around Canada Water

Where the table tops in Canada Water get complicated is rarely the stone itself, and much more often the room the stone has to go into. Developer flats almost without exception - handleless slab units in an open-plan living space, kitchen along one wall with a 2.4m to 3m run and a small return or a narrow island, and the original 20mm laminate or thin composite being swapped out as the first blocks reach their second owner. The drawing we work from is agreed with you first, so no one in Canada Water finds out on fitting day that something was assumed.

Riser panels, wall boxes and the boiler cupboard sit in fixed positions the developer will not move for a worktop. The awkward part is the base rather than the stone, since a heavy top on a narrow foot tips the moment somebody leans on the far edge. Every face polished, because a table is looked down on.

These houses are three storeys on a small footprint, so the kitchen is on the ground floor and everything else is stacked above it. The complication is the programme rather than the building. Roller shutters and bollards lengthen the carry.

Locally the mix runs to 1990s dockside flats, 2010s apartment block and 2020s regeneration tower. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.

True everywhere

Restaurant and cafe table tops, in short

  • Every edge is profiled and polished, because every edge is visible and touchable.
  • Thicker stone or a mitred edge reads as a heavier table without adding much weight to lift.
  • Round and oval tops are cut on the CNC, not by hand, so the curve is true all the way round.
  • Quartz is engineered and heat sensitive, so anything straight off the stove wants a mat under it.

The place

Why Canada Water is its own job

Working in Canada Water regularly means we plan for what catches people out here rather than finding it on the day. Everything goes through a concierge and a booked service lift with a delivery slot, loading bays are timed, and the goods route runs through basement car parks with 2m headroom that a long-wheelbase van clears but a roof-racked slab frame does not. The whole job is dictated by the service lift booking - one slot, one lift, so the tops get cut into liftable pieces and jointed on site. All of it is priced before you commit to anything, and the itemised quote shows exactly where the awkward parts of the job are and what they add.

The work

What restaurant table tops involves

The service covers tops only. The bases stay yours, which is rather the point: a top drilled to the plate you have costs a fraction of replacing whole tables. Packaging and offcuts leave with the van. Nothing is stacked in a dining room that has to be laid up again for the evening. You end up with an edge that survives chair backs, because it is profiled and polished on every face rather than cut square and left as it came off the saw.

Wobble rather than colour is what gets a table complained about, so the foot, the glide and the floor get as much attention here as the material does. The base plate is measured for its bolt pattern and for its overall spread, because one sets the drilling and the other sets the biggest top it will safely hold. A shell unit means the pieces are made to a drawing rather than to a room, so the seating plan has to be settled before cutting starts. Cut round on the machine, true the whole way.

The money

What it costs in Canada Water

Drilling and the fixing kit are priced per piece as well, since every base plate has its own bolt pattern and its own depth. Short lengths nest well and waste little, so the material line is usually the kindest part of a galley quote. Supply is £110 to £550 per square metre, and it is the least interesting line on the quote, because the operations listed underneath it are what separate one job from another. A repeated size is cheaper, and the figure shows why.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Canada Water in the housing figures

On these streets very few homes are lived in by their owners. Taking a unit for a season argues for something that packs away, which is a thinner section and a foot that folds flat. Chosen for a business, not for a kitchen at home.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The carry, and what it rules out

A bay shared across a parade of shops turns over all day, so the arrival time matters more than the length of the booking does. A table order comes off the van as a stack of frames and a pallet of bases, and both of those need somewhere to stand before either is moved. Deliveries land before the doors open wherever possible.

What Canada Water asks for

Nothing about the houses on this patch predicts how much of this we do, because it is not housing work. What the houses ask for is worktop replacement and worktop installation. The stone, the machining and the crew are the same.

Access

Getting stone into a Canada Water kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Canada Water

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

01

Is Canada Water on your patch?

Yes. Canada Water is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE16. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Southwark. Building management is often the real gate rather than the bay itself, since the barrier, the shutter and the lift each need someone with a fob. The bases are the heavy half of the delivery, so the pallet is dealt with first while there are still hands free for it. The plan on the van matches the plan on the floor. The template happens in your kitchen and so does the fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

02

What is different about restaurant table tops in Canada Water?

The kitchen and the dining space share one room front to back, with the stair enclosure taking a bite out of one side of it. The commercial space in a new block is a ground-floor unit with a service bay or a loading door behind it, and that is the most straightforward delivery a table order gets: a level threshold, a flat floor and a goods lift where the unit runs over more than one level. Terraces and gardens live outdoors all year. Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. None of that is scribed against on a table, since it stands clear of every wall, so the awkwardness moves from the back edge to the floor and the base. Feet are wound out where the floor falls away.

03

Is access a problem in Canada Water?

Lift doors close on a timer that takes no account of somebody holding a worktop, so a pair of hands stays on the buttons at each end. A table order is many small pieces rather than one long one, so the route decides how many trips the delivery takes rather than how big anything can be. Tops travel upright in a frame, faces apart. Time-limited bays are camera-enforced across a lot of managed estates, so the unload runs to the clock and the van moves off afterwards. Where the standing is short the pieces are counted off at the tail lift against the plan rather than checked once they are already inside. A long push from the kerb is planned, not discovered.

04

Would you call Canada Water a restaurant table tops area?

Not especially, and pretending otherwise would be simple enough. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement and worktop installation. It is a fact about the local housing rather than about the work. The job is quoted, cut and fitted the same way wherever on the patch it lands. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. A room opening in a second phase is worth naming now, while the material is still on the ground and a match is a telephone call. A trial piece before a large order is money well spent. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Where an operator changes hands the bases usually stay, so a refit becomes a resurface and the saving comes from what is already bolted down. Orders are counted in pieces and never in metres.

05

What makes one Canada Water kitchen dearer than the next?

Where a run finishes hard against a wall the last few millimetres are scribed, and where it finishes in open floor it is cut square and polished, which is two different jobs on one length. A table top answers to none of that, since it meets no wall and needs no scribe, but the pieces come off the same slab as the counter and the colour has to carry across both. A spare comes off the same run or it is not a spare. Supply only, material is £110 to £550 per square metre, with templating, fabrication and fitting quoted on their own lines.

06

What holds a template up more often than anything else?

A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the template plots the intermediate points. A column, a boxed duct or a fixed bench in a dining room is designed around with a shape cut to suit rather than notched on site. The base carries the weight and the floor carries the base. Send the fit-out drawing with final table positions and sizes, the base specification, and the delivery window the managing agent is prepared to accept. One owner can take a date next week while the flat below needs three weeks of notice, so several kitchens in one building end up scheduled by the slowest permission. A table top bolted to a base you already own is loose furniture rather than a fixture, so it leaves with the operator at the end of a term. A brand standard is followed to the letter or not at all.

07

Is templating a separate visit from fitting?

The fitting itself is one visit: a plain run is a morning, an island with splashbacks takes most of the day. The template is taken in your kitchen after the units are in and fixed, never before. On the fitting day floors and door frames are protected, joins clamped flush, sink and hob sealed. The room is square, the walls are plumb and the floor is flat, so almost every complication in the job belongs to the building rather than the kitchen. Table tops sit outside all of that, because a top touches no wall at all and every one of its edges is profiled, polished and on show. The stone is straightforward and the base fixing is the job.

08

Do you cut drainer grooves on Canada Water kitchens?

A groove set needs a clear stretch of worktop beside the bowl, so it competes with the run for length instead of being free surface. Grooves are machined into the surface rather than applied to it, so there is nothing to come loose later. Plasterboard partitions mean light scribes and clean joins, and the fabrication effort moves to the visible faces instead. What a table top needs from us is a size, a shape and the base plate it has to be drilled to, and very little else. Sizes agreed on paper before any slab is committed.

09

The floor in my Canada Water kitchen slopes. Does that matter?

Where a run meets an appliance, level decides whether that appliance door still clears the stone above it. An island is where this usually shows, standing free with no wall to level against. If the carcasses are corrected, the template is taken again, since a drawing off units that then moved is worthless. Where a corner is a couple of degrees off, a mitre cut to a theoretical ninety degrees opens on the wall side and there is no closing it afterwards. Fixed seating sets the dimension it faces, so a piece against a bench is drawn to the bench instead of to a standard size. A shallow room decides the diameter early.

10

Upstands or a full-height splashback?

It is quoted by area like the worktop, so a long run is a material line rather than a trim. Upstand or splashback, the stone is cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time, so the batch actually matches. Windows are small and set to suit the elevation rather than the room, so most of the wall above the worktop is solid. The commercial space in a block like this is a ground-floor unit with a service bay behind it, which is the easiest delivery a table order ever gets. Converted houses mean several sizes, not one.
