Chessington kitchens

The kitchens we meet in Chessington

People ring us about worktop fabrication in Chessington at the point where they have a kitchen in mind and no idea what their own walls are going to do to it. Suburban semis and 1980s closes with rectangular kitchen-diners, most often reworked as a U with runs of 3m, 2.4m and 1.8m, or a straight run plus a peninsula facing a dining table - islands appear only in the wider detached houses. Tell us which street you are on in Chessington and what the old worktop is, and we can usually narrow it down before we visit.

The consumer unit and the meter often sit high on the wall at one end of the kitchen, and neither of them is going to move to suit a run of stone. The workshop works to the template drawing and to the measured route, in that order. The offcut is planned before the main piece is cut.

The original room is timber over a ventilated void and the newer half is a slab, so the floor gives underfoot on one side of the junction and not on the other. Where a full length can come down the side and in at the back, the nest follows the slab instead of the building. Cut-outs are placed where the fabric will take them.

On this patch the buildings are 1930s semi, 1950s and 1960s estate housing, 1980s close and modern detached. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.

True everywhere

Worktop fabrication, in short

  • Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
  • Sintered stone is hard on tooling and chips at an edge with nothing under it, so it is cut with more care.
  • Every one of the 181 surfaces we supply goes through the same machines.
  • Material guarantee runs 25 years and workmanship five.

The place

Why Chessington is its own job

The reason we survey rather than work from a drawing is that a drawing tells you nothing about getting into a kitchen in Chessington. Wide estate roads, driveways and garages everywhere, and space to work off the van tailgate at the door; some of the newer closes have shared private drives with turning heads that get blocked by residents' cars. Plenty of room to work here, so this is where a single long 3.6m piece with an undermount sink is actually deliverable in one go. We sort it out with a template, then the quote says what sorting it out costs.

The work

What worktop fabrication involves

What you are paying for is machining to a drawing: edges, cut-outs, mitres and joins, each a separate operation with its own setup rather than one generic charge. The pieces are cut to the template rather than to a nominal size, dry-assembled on the bench to prove they fit each other, then polished and wrapped for the van. You are left with joins in places that were chosen rather than places that happened, each one over a cabinet gable where the stone has something solid underneath it.

Fabrication is machine work with a person deciding what the machine does, and the deciding is the part that matters. The finished pieces are wrapped, edge-protected and loaded in reverse fitting order so the first one off the van is the first one down. The kitchen here is usually an L, so one internal corner carries the join and everything else is worked outwards from it. What comes off the machines is what arrives at the house.

The money

What it costs in Chessington

The nesting decides the material bill. How the pieces sit on a slab determines whether the job takes one or two, and that is worked before the price is given. Short lengths nest well and waste little, so the material line is usually the kindest part of a galley quote. Colour and finish account for most of the distance between £110 and £550 per square metre. Everything decided after that is labour, and labour is quoted by the operation. What the workshop does is on the quote in its own words.

What Chessington asks for

Managed stock usually comes with its own rules about working hours, waste, and who is allowed on site. A remake for a change of mind is chargeable and a remake for our error is not, and that line is better stated before the saw runs than after. Nothing is cut before the signature comes back.

Infrequent work for this area, though we do it whenever it is asked for. Worktop installation and worktop replacement are the commoner calls. Nothing about the method or the standard varies with frequency.

1930s and inter-war semis

Chessington in the housing figures

Around here building from before 1919 is scarce, so the runs sit against walls made to a tighter tolerance. An out-of-square corner is machined to the angle it actually is, not persuaded into place with force. Nested against the run lengths this stock allows.

Getting stone into a Chessington kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Chessington

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

01

Is Chessington far enough out to be a problem for you?

Yes. Chessington is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are KT9. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Kingston upon Thames. Having the van on the drive means the load can be staged, so the heavy pieces come off last and go straight in instead of standing outside. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. That is the last thing settled before dispatch. You never have to visit anything or collect anything: we template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen.

02

Why would worktop fabrication in Chessington be any different from anywhere else?

Plaster in the older half is a sand and cement backing on brick while the newer half is board on dabs, so the same fixing bites in one wall and breaks through the other. Most of these have a side passage and a back door, so a full-length piece can usually reach the kitchen without being cut down, and the piece sizing is driven by the slab rather than the route. Where the floor drops away the front edge is cut to suit. Alcove pieces get cut oversize on both scribe edges, with the true wall angles carried on the template drawing rather than assumed. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. The notch is machined, never ground in later.

03

What is the carry like in Chessington?

Suction lifters need a clean dry face to hold, so in the wet the pads come off and the piece goes back to being carried on webbing by hand. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. The saw never sees a length the hall will not take. A dropped kerb wide enough for a car is not always wide enough for a long-wheelbase van, and the width of the crossing decides the rest. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. Loaded for the carry, not for the van.

04

Is worktop fabrication what Chessington is known for?

Not really, and claiming otherwise would cost nothing and mean nothing. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation and worktop replacement. It reflects the local housing rather than any difference in the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted here the same way it is anywhere else on the patch. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. One kept offcut saves a whole flat later. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Repeat runs come off a jig, not a fresh setout.

05

Where does the money go on a Chessington worktop?

A run that stops in mid-air at the open end needs a finished end rather than a cut one, and that end takes the same edge work as the whole front. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. Apron mitres are bonded and polished before dispatch. Material alone is £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are never folded into that figure.

06

What needs to be ready before you come to Chessington?

Where a breast interrupts a long wall the join can often go there, so it reads as a natural break rather than a line in the middle of a worktop. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. A plan-angle mitre closes on paper only. The peninsula end detail needs deciding up front - square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall - because a waterfall end has to be cut in sequence off the same part of the slab as the top. Consent for the work sits with the freeholder or the managing body, and getting it in writing first avoids a crew arriving to a locked door. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The signature on the drawing carries the cost of it.

07

Is the quote a fixed price or an estimate?

What moves the figure after templating is a change you make: a different edge, an extra cut-out, a bigger sink chosen late. Plumbing, gas and electrical work are not in the figure, because we do not do them. No installed price per square metre is published, because it is not a real number. The returns into a breast recess are the tightest scribes in the room, and they are eased in rather than forced. The workshop cuts to the plotted line rather than to a nominal dimension, which is why a scribe edge leaves the bench deliberately oversize. The measured wall angle travels to the saw.

08

How many joins will a Chessington kitchen need?

Veining carries through a join where both pieces come off the same slab, which is decided at nesting. There are only ever a few legal positions, and the one taken is furthest from the light. A finished join is typically two to three millimetres, colour-matched and sanded flush. Where a run finishes hard against a wall the last few millimetres are scribed, and where it finishes in open floor it is cut square and polished, which is two different jobs on one length. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. Seams land over gables, never over a void.

09

How many visits does a Chessington worktop take?

Templating and fitting are two visits, not one, and the gap between them is when the stone is actually cut. A template on a normal kitchen takes two to three hours in the room. The template produces a drawing, and the workshop cuts to that drawing once you agree it. The plaster is a thick float and set over brick that has blown in patches, so a wall sounds solid in one place and hollow a hand-span away. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. Two slabs get sequenced when one will not cover the run.

10

Will I have to look after it? What does a Chessington worktop need?

Topping a seal up is a wipe-on job with a cloth. Quartz and sintered stone never need sealing: quartz is non-porous and sintered stone has effectively zero porosity. Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. The drains run down the side alley to a gully and an inspection cover near the back door, and the sink waste has always gone out on that side of the house. What does drive the bench work is the knocked-through kitchen-diner: the return worktop and any peninsula are seen end-on from the dining side, so we nest the pieces so the veining carries across the internal corner in the same direction rather than turning through ninety degrees. What the shell demands is solved in the shop, not the kitchen.
