Two kitchens a street apart in Chessington can turn bathroom worktop fitting into two quite different pieces of work, which is why nothing is priced from the doorstep. Suburban semis and 1980s closes with rectangular kitchen-diners, most often reworked as a U with runs of 3m, 2.4m and 1.8m, or a straight run plus a peninsula facing a dining table: islands appear only in the wider detached houses. The survey answers it, the drawing records it, and you sign off the drawing before a single sheet is cut.
Crittall windows were swapped for plastic ones in openings that were made good rather than rebuilt, which leaves reveals that are neither straight nor equal. A short piece carries an overflow, a waste and a sealant line, and any one of the three can spoil it. It is the smallest piece we cut and the most crowded.
The original room is timber over a ventilated void and the newer half is a slab, so the floor gives underfoot on one side of the junction and not on the other. Where the bathroom has been taken over a rear addition the room gains length rather than width, so a longer vanity becomes possible and a deeper one still does not. Half tiling leaves a line the splash return has to meet.
The kinds of building we work in here are 1930s semi, 1950s and 1960s estate housing, 1980s close and modern detached. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
