Bathroom worktop fitting in Hook tends to go wrong in the planning rather than in the fitting, and planning it properly means starting from the building. Postwar and interwar semis with compact kitchens of around 2.4m by 3m, frequently extended over the side alley or opened into the dining room to make a straight 3.6m run with the sink under the original window and a small breakfast bar at the far end. We would rather find the awkward corner now than on the day the stone arrives in Hook, so the survey looks at everything.
The kitchen was laid out to a nineteen-sixties module, so the units in it are often 500 or 550 deep and a modern carcass does not land on the same line. Nobody looks at a bathroom surface until the sealant discolours, at which point nobody looks at anything else in the room. A bathroom is a short job that repays being drawn properly.
Door openings and the hall were set to a generous standard, so a long piece turns in from the front without being stood on end to do it. The complication is the service riser boxed into a corner: the top is notched round it with a radiused internal corner, never a square one, and the notch is machined at the works from a measurement taken at the finished face. Square rooms make short work of a vanity template.
On this patch the buildings are 1930s semi, 1950s council-built semi, 1960s terrace and modern infill. They were built to different tolerances, and the stone has to absorb that.
