If you are weighing up bathroom worktop fitting in Old Malden, the first thing worth knowing is that the building decides more than the brochure does. Older cottages around the church with tiny kitchens under 2.4m of run, and interwar semis on the surrounding roads that mostly get a rear extension across the full width giving a 4m run with an island of 1.8m to 2.1m and bifolds onto the garden. Old kitchens rarely announce what they are. That is why somebody comes out and looks before a price is written.
Where the side return has been filled in, one side of the new room is old brick and the other is new blockwork, and the two do not behave alike. Cleaning is what a bathroom surface actually lives through, since limescale, bleach and whatever gets used on the mirror all end up on it sooner or later. A vanity top is a small piece with a great deal drilled through it.
The room is wide enough that an island turns up in nearly every scheme, and how far the drainage can be taken is what fixes where it sits. The original bathroom in these houses is the small room over the hall, and a vanity in it is short, shallow and hard against a wall at each end, so both ends are scribed and there is no tolerance left between them. Old pipework is boxed rather than moved, and the top notches round it.
Around here the stock is Victorian cottage, 1930s semi, 1930s detached and postwar infill. They fail in different places, which is why the survey looks at different things.
