Eel Pie Island kitchens
The kitchens we meet in Eel Pie Island
Nearly all the worktop jobs we quote in Eel Pie Island start with the same conversation about what is already in the kitchen and what is staying. Small idiosyncratic homes, many self-built or converted from boathouses and studios, with kitchens of 2m to 2.8m against a timber-framed wall, lightweight construction throughout, and open-plan living where a peninsula does the work of an island. You do not have to work out which of those you have. We will look at it with you when we come to Eel Pie Island.
Lower ground floor kitchens are reached by a stair with a winder in it, and the head height over that winder is lower than the room at either end. North light and afternoon light read a surface differently, so a sample belongs in the corner that gets the worst of it rather than the best. The slab is the decision; the room only sets how much of it you need.
The rear extension is frequently original rather than added, which means it is solidly built and just as far out of square as the rest of the house. Rooms in these houses run long and narrow with the only honest daylight at the garden end, so a pale honed surface does more for the working half of the kitchen than any colour with depth in it. Even light lets a mid-tone hold its own.
The fabric of the place is converted boathouse, self-built river chalet, 1970s island house and artist studio conversion. Knowing which one it is before we arrive is half the survey done.
