Worktop fabrication in Ilford

Yes. Ilford is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are IG1. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Redbridge. Underground loading has a height restriction, and a van with an A-frame on it is taller than the driver remembers. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. We pack for the tail lift we are actually going to use. Where the bay sits some distance from the core, the carry across the car park is the longest leg of the day and gets boarded and lit. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. A long walk from the van earns heavier corner protection.

Honestly, no, though it would be easy to claim otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation and worktop replacement. That says something about the housing round here, not about the work. Quote, cut and fit are the same here as on any other part of the patch. Where a family has been living around a building site for months, the finish date carries more weight than any other part of the specification. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Proven on the bench before dispatch. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Nested for the job in front of us.

A tall bank of housings at one end takes a chunk out of the working run, so the usable length of that side is always less than the length of the wall behind it. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. Every piece is labelled to its place in the run. Where a corner is a couple of degrees off, a mitre cut to a theoretical ninety degrees opens on the wall side and there is no closing it afterwards. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. A deep relief needs material left behind it. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. Someone who expects to still be there in ten years asks different questions: how a honed finish marks, what a sealer does and does not do, and whether a chip by the sink can be repaired in place. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Dry-assembled before it leaves.

An island is where this usually shows, standing free with no wall to level against. Packing takes up small variation. It is not there to hide something that belongs in the units. A sloping floor is not the problem. The plane the unit tops finish in is. The stone carries the scribe because the wall cannot be persuaded, so back edges are cut oversize and eased in rather than dropped straight down. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. The notch is machined, never ground in later.

A piece travels on edge, never flat, because on edge is how stone of that length carries its own weight. A join added to get stone into the room is a different thing from a join added because the slab ran out, and the quote says which is which. A car will often hold more than its doors will admit, and it is the clear width between the door edges that a piece actually has to pass through. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. The drawing states a maximum length and the shop honours it.

There is nothing to pay before the template visit. Upstands and splashbacks are templated after the worktop is down and settled, so they are a separate visit. The template produces a drawing, and the workshop cuts to that drawing once you agree it. The original front door is narrow and the hall is often the only way in, which puts a ceiling on the longest single piece. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. The offcut is planned before the main piece is cut.

Most breakages happen on the carry, which is why the route is walked and measured before anything comes off the van. A piece is never laid flat across a gap while it is moved, because that is how stone cracks unaided. Door frames and the stair route are protected too, since most contact happens on the way in. Once a long piece is in on the diagonal there is no room left for anyone else, so it travels up alone and is met on the landing above. The workshop cuts to that constraint, so a piece leaves the bench already sized to reach where it is going. Polishing a piece that cannot reach the room wastes a day.
