Worktop templating in Nunhead
A digital template plotting the room as it really is, taken once your units are fitted, fixed and level.
Nunhead kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is why the visit happens after the units are in and not before. Sink, tap and hob on site, not on order.
Smaller artisan Victorian terraces where the original kitchen is a cramped closet wing - the standard upgrade is a modest rear extension giving a straight 3m run plus a 1.2m return, with a peninsula instead of an island because the room is not wide enough for both.
The rear room is generous with a chimney breast in one corner, so the run gains a return and two scribed ends whatever the plan drew. Alcoves either side of the breast are rarely the same width and rarely parallel, so each one is templated as its own piece with its own scribe. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn.
The mix here is Victorian two-up two-down, Victorian terrace, 1950s council rebuild and interwar semi. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.
True everywhere
Worktop templating, in short
- Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
- Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
- Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
- A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.
Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The shape of the run
If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. The drawing leaves site complete.

Getting stone into the room
Steeply graded streets running up towards the cemetery, narrow carriageways with parking both sides, and a lot of houses with a side alley too narrow for a slab trolley, so it is a front-door carry.

The building, and what it does to the job
Rooms here are frequently under 2.4m wide, so the client has to be talked out of an island early or the walkways end up under 900mm.

What gets asked for here
This is not the local speciality and there is no point saying otherwise: worktop design & quotation, worktop installation and worktop replacement is what the housing here actually asks for. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way regardless.

Questions
Worktop templating in Nunhead
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Nunhead?
Yes. Nunhead is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE15. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. Unrestricted kerbside is straightforward as long as the space in front of the property is actually clear when the van arrives. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. It goes on the job sheet for the fitting crew. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Nunhead change how worktop templating works?
A semi has a side passage, and whether it is wide enough to carry a piece flat and turn it in at the back door is the first thing worth measuring. The laser plots the bow along the back of the run, which is why a tape reading taken beforehand never matches. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. Rooms here are frequently under 2.4m wide, so the client has to be talked out of an island early or the walkways end up under 900mm.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Nunhead?
Steeply graded streets running up towards the cemetery, narrow carriageways with parking both sides, and a lot of houses with a side alley too narrow for a slab trolley, so it is a front-door carry. The side passage is the measurement that matters, because a piece has to be carried flat down it and then turned in at the back door, and the turn is always tighter than the passage. The templater measures that route on the same visit, so the drawing leaves site already knowing the maximum piece. That is part of what the visit is for. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.
Do you get much worktop templating work in Nunhead?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop installation and worktop replacement. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is inconvenient exactly when a programme is tight. The room as it is, not as it was drawn. Why do two Nunhead kitchens the same size price differently?
Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. A layout templated off one wall instead of one datum will not sit right once all the pieces are down together. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Floors settle, and once base units are packed and levelled properly the stone sits true while everything else in the room admits it is not. One measurement never describes it, which is why a tape reading taken before the visit rarely matches the template. That is why the visit takes two or three hours. Units fixed and packed level over the sloping floor, walls replastered and dry at their final thickness (tiling and splashbacks go on after the worktop, never before), and the sink, tap and hob physically on site, with a Belfast sink built in and set at its finished height. Consent for the work sits with the freeholder or the managing body, and getting it in writing first avoids a crew arriving to a locked door. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. Appliances on site, not on order.
