Peckham kitchens
The buildings and streets around Peckham
You can plan stone table top work in Peckham from a floor plan, but the plan and the room have a habit of disagreeing once the tape comes out. The Bellenden-side Victorian terraces are extension country - kitchen moved into a rear infill with a 3m run against the flank and a small island or peninsula - while the estate flats and warehouse-style conversions to the north stay galley-shaped with a single run and a tall bank. If you are not sure which of those describes your kitchen, that is normal, and it is exactly what the template visit settles.
The original front door is narrow and the hall is often the only way in, which puts a ceiling on the longest single piece. Covers turn over several times in an evening, so the surface is judged on how it looks after the fourth wipe down rather than on how it looked at eleven in the morning. Twenty tops that match, not twenty that nearly do.
A villa cut into flats leaves kitchens in rooms that were never kitchens, with services run to wherever they could physically be made to reach. That measurement comes first: once the gangway is fixed the table dimension follows, and on most of these frontages that means a six hundred millimetre square for two and a seven hundred millimetre round where the room widens towards the back. A goods lift takes a frame and saves a morning.
The building stock is Georgian terrace pockets, Victorian bay-front terrace, 1960s and 1970s estate and 2010s conversion of light industrial. That is why the same worktop costs differently two doors apart.
