Putney Vale kitchens

The kitchens we meet in Putney Vale

The reason splashback and upstand work in Putney Vale is quoted per kitchen rather than per metre comes down to the range of rooms these worktops end up in. A compact interwar estate where houses have small rear kitchens with a larder recess, and the usual improvement is opening into the rear lobby to gain a return of about 1.5m. Layouts stay modest with no islands and limited wall space above the run. We measure the kitchen you have, not the kitchen the plans said you would have. Those two part company often.

The boiler has usually been moved into the kitchen at some point, with its flue through the outer leaf and its pipework surface run to the nearest corner. A wall out by a few millimetres over a metre will show behind a full-height panel and disappear behind an upstand. Twenty millimetres of packing behind a panel is not a fix.

The under-stair cupboard opens off the kitchen in most of them, and its door swing is the reason a corner run stops where it does. The ragged band left when old tiles and laminate come off together is what usually decides upstand over full height. The wall build-up sets the depth of the return.

The archetypes on this patch are 1930s cottage estate house, Postwar terrace and Low-rise flat. What is behind the plaster is different in each, and it matters at fixing.

Splashbacks and upstands, in short

  • Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
  • The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.
  • Upstands are small pieces, so they usually come out of the offcut the worktop leaves.
  • Dekton and sintered stone are stable in heat and daylight, which is why they suit a wall behind a hob.

The place

Why Putney Vale is its own job

Before we quote a length in Putney Vale we want to know how the stone gets in and what it will be sitting against. The estate sits beside the A3 and is reached from a small number of entrances, so the approach has to be right first time or it means a long detour. Inside the estate the roads are quiet with unrestricted parking close to the doors. Wall space is short here, so if a client wants a full-height stone splashback behind the hob, check the extractor bracket position first, it usually lands right where the panel edge would be. Somebody comes out to Putney Vale, looks at all of it, and puts a number on it before you decide anything.

The work

What worktop splashbacks & upstands involves

The pieces are made to the wall they will stand against, so they are not stock items and cannot be ordered from a size. Each one is drawn for its own stretch of wall. These are templated after the worktop is fitted and settled, never before, so they scribe to the wall the worktop actually meets. Socket and switch positions need to be final first. You end up with the room finished. The wall was the last thing outstanding, so once these pieces are on there is nothing left waiting on another visit or another trade.

Behind a hob the choice of material stops being about looks: a resin-based surface will mark under sustained heat where a sintered one will not. Internal corners are butt-jointed rather than mitred, and the vertical is put where the light does not rake across it. Ceilings are generous here and the units stop well below the picture rail, so full height is genuinely tall and the sheet gets heavy. Machined to the room, not trimmed to it.

The money

What it costs in Putney Vale

It is priced as its own item so you can see what removing the grout line actually costs before deciding. The corner is either a join or a single cut piece, and which one it is changes both the price and how the run reads. For a rough sense of the material, £110 to £550 per square metre supply only is the honest span. Treat it as one line of a quote that will carry several more. Height is a decision with a figure against it.

The carry, and what it rules out

Unrestricted kerbside is straightforward as long as the space in front of the property is actually clear when the van arrives. Splashbacks are normally the last thing off, so a short parking window is exactly when they get rushed. A panel carried past a live lane gets a second pair of hands.

What Putney Vale asks for

A frequent job on this patch rather than the leading one, which is worktop replacement. It sits with worktop replacement and worktop installation in what the local stock actually generates.

Putney Vale in the housing figures

Across this patch the bulk of the housing belongs to the rebuilding decades after the war. Where the boiler or the flue sits in one spot house after house, the panel is drawn round it once and reused. The height is a decision, not a default.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Putney Vale

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

01

Do you cover Putney Vale?

Yes. Putney Vale is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW15. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Wandsworth. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. Panels come off the van in one trip where possible, since a tall piece handled repeatedly is a piece asking to be chipped. Nothing this long gets walked while a warden is circling. Both visits happen in your kitchen, the template and the fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

02

Does the housing in Putney Vale change how worktop splashbacks & upstands works?

The chimney breast served a back boiler and is usually still standing, so there is a shallow recess on one side of the room. These kitchens are nearly always retiled at least twice, and stripping the old tiles takes the bottom course of plaster with it because the original laminate top ran underneath the tiles rather than up to them. Nothing goes on a wall that will not hold it. Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. It is usually what pushes a job towards a 100mm upstand instead of a full-height panel, because an upstand rides what a panel exposes. Scribed along the top edge as well.

03

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Putney Vale?

A tiled hall floor takes a dropped corner badly, so boards go down over the tiles before anything comes through the door. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. Suction lifters take a panel where hands cannot get a grip. A free-parking street with cars both sides can still leave the van forty metres away, and that distance is carry, not driving. Upstands travel in a crate and can wait on the van, which gives some flexibility a full-height panel does not. The crate stays on the van until the route in is clear.

04

Do you do much worktop splashbacks & upstands around Putney Vale?

One of the three we are asked for most, although worktop replacement is asked for more. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Where a family has been living around a building site for months, the finish date carries more weight than any other part of the specification. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Panels for every unit, cut in one go. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. A spare panel is cheaper now than next year.

05

What am I actually paying for, line by line?

Butt-jointing over the gable puts the seam a few hundred millimetres back from the corner, below the eye line instead of straight across it. The same shape decides where splashback pieces break, and a joint in a corner reads as a detail while one in a clear run reads as a mistake. Corners get their own pieces. Expect £110 to £550 per square metre for material supply only, with templating, fabrication and fitting on their own lines.

06

Is there anything I have to finish before the template in Putney Vale?

Anything that has to stay accessible, a stopcock, a gas meter, a riser panel, is marked on the template so the stone is cut around it instead of over it. A tall panel that fits at the worktop will stand off the wall at the top unless the wall is dubbed out or the panel is scribed. The obstruction breaks the length, every time. The old tiling must be off and the wall made good and dry before templating, not on fitting day. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. A 100mm upstand is the low-maintenance answer, and full-height stone is the one that has to be committed to early. An owner can wait for it; a void period cannot.

07

What do you need from me for the sink and hob cut-outs?

The tap hole is drilled in the workshop too, and its position depends on how far the tap has to swing. Each cut-out is priced on its own line, so a range, a bowl and a half, a boiling tap and a drainer are four items rather than one. Corner sinks and corner hobs sit exactly where the joint wants to be, so on an L the cut-out positions get settled before the join positions do. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. The run decides where that joint falls.

08

Do the template and the fit happen on the same visit?

Upstands and splashbacks are templated after the worktop is down and settled, so they are a separate visit. The fitting itself is one visit: a plain run is a morning, an island with splashbacks takes most of the day. The design and quotation visit comes first. It is free and carries no obligation. Crittall windows were swapped for plastic ones in openings that were made good rather than rebuilt, which leaves reveals that are neither straight nor equal. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. The batch is held while the tops are cut, or the colour drifts.

09

Who decides where a join falls?

A mitred join at a corner is a different job from a butt join along a run, and they are not priced the same. Join count and position are settled from the template drawing rather than improvised on the fitting day. Join count is a question about slab size and run length, nothing else. One leg of an L is nearly always the working run and the other little more than a landing space, but both are templated, cut and edged to the same standard. Upstands follow the run exactly, so every internal and external corner is a separate mitred or butted piece. The panel seam sits over the worktop seam.

10

I have a slab already. Can you template and fit it in Putney Vale?

Sinks, taps and hobs are yours to buy in any case, and they only have to be in the room for the template. Templating, fabrication and fitting are the same three lines whether the stone came from us or from you. Stone cut to somebody else’s drawing cannot usefully be re-cut to yours. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. Upstands are the cheapest way to finish several kitchens consistently, and they come out of the offcuts the tops leave behind. Reordered next year, it will not match.

“I used Karem’s services 5 years ago for purchasing and fitting the quartz worktop in my then brand new kitchen. The price was reasonable and the service reliable and spot on, no delays in fitting, misunderstanding or excuses. I recommended him to a friend, who also used his services and they were happy too! If I need to order new kitchen work top again, I would definitely use him again. Thanks Karem!”
