Roehampton kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Kitchens in this stock are compact and reasonably square, which makes the fixed lines a larger share of the total than the material is. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. Siliconed to the top, never grouted.
The postwar estate flats have small standardised kitchens, typically 2m by 3m, with services boxed at one end and a fixed sink and cooker position, so refits are straight runs with a return. The older village properties and the cottage estate houses have conventional rear kitchens with more scope for an L or a small peninsula.
In the tower and slab blocks the lift car depth is the hard limit, anything over about 2m has to be cut to fit the car, so the joint position is decided by the building, not the kitchen.
Walls are dense block or in-situ concrete with a bonded plaster, so the bottom course of tiles brings plaster with it when the old top comes off. The rear kitchen wall in ex-council flats and maisonettes is commonly dense in-situ concrete or blockwork with a thin skim, which means mechanical fixings are hard work and the splashback is held on adhesive rather than screwed. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure.
What we are usually templating in is 1950s modernist slab and point block, Interwar cottage estate and Roehampton village Georgian and Victorian. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Splashbacks and upstands, in short
- Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
- Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
- Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
- The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.
Covered on our south west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
Where a landlord or housing provider is involved there is a specification to meet and a process to follow, and both are settled before a date is offered. Full-height panels need the wall made good first, which is another trade and another timescale. The wall has to be ready.
Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop fabrication come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

Getting stone into the room
The slab blocks are set back from the road behind landscaping with long approach paths, controlled entry and lifts that are undersized for stone, and the upper floors make a stair carry impractical. Booked lift access and an early slot are essential.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Roehampton
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Roehampton?
Yes. Roehampton is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW15. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Wandsworth. A free-parking street with cars both sides can still leave the van forty metres away, and that distance is carry, not driving. Splashbacks are normally the last thing off, so a short parking window is exactly when they get rushed. Handling is where these pieces get damaged. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Roehampton change how worktop splashbacks & upstands works?
Walls are dense block or in-situ concrete with a bonded plaster, so the bottom course of tiles brings plaster with it when the old top comes off. The rear kitchen wall in ex-council flats and maisonettes is commonly dense in-situ concrete or blockwork with a thin skim, which means mechanical fixings are hard work and the splashback is held on adhesive rather than screwed. Cut from the same slab run as the tops. In the tower and slab blocks the lift car depth is the hard limit, anything over about 2m has to be cut to fit the car, so the joint position is decided by the building, not the kitchen.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Roehampton?
The slab blocks are set back from the road behind landscaping with long approach paths, controlled entry and lifts that are undersized for stone, and the upper floors make a stair carry impractical. Booked lift access and an early slot are essential. A car that takes 2.4m on the diagonal will not take a three-metre worktop however it is stood, and there is no trimming it on the landing. It is usually the full-height panels rather than the tops that will not make the turn, and that only shows up when they arrive. Joint positions follow from that.
Is Roehampton really a worktop splashbacks & upstands area?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop fabrication. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. A worktop replacement between tenancies is a single-day job by design, because the flat is not earning while it is empty. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Same batch, same run, same day. Where kitchens turn over between tenancies the priority is a surface that survives a decade of being treated as a chopping board. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Sockets final before template.
Why do two Roehampton kitchens the same size price differently?
A peninsula is an island with one end tied to a run, which means the join between them has to be planned rather than allowed to happen. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. Corners get their own pieces. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Anything that has to stay accessible, a stopcock, a gas meter, a riser panel, is marked on the template so the stone is cut around it instead of over it. It is usually what pushes a job towards a 100mm upstand instead of a full-height panel, because an upstand rides what a panel exposes. Make the wall good first, or accept the detail. Any surface trunking or conduit has to be rerouted or accepted and boxed before templating, because the stone cannot be scribed around a live conduit on site. Managed stock usually comes with its own rules about working hours, waste, and who is allowed on site. A 100mm upstand is the low-maintenance answer, and full-height stone is the one that has to be committed to early. Decided before fabrication, not after.
