Worktop templating in Shadwell

A digital template plotting the room as it really is, taken once your units are fitted, fixed and level.

Shadwell kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

post-war council block1980s dock-edge housing2010s onwards residential tower

The room is square, the walls are plumb and the floor is flat, so almost every complication in the job belongs to the building rather than the kitchen. The template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended, and the gap between those two is what this visit is for. The room as it is, to the millimetre.

Newer towers near the station have compact open-plan kitchens with a short island of 1.6m to 2m.

The through road is a red route and the market street is closed to vehicles during trading, so timing the drop matters more than distance. The older blocks have separate kitchens of about 2.2m in an L, often serving large households, with heavy daily use and a preference for hard-wearing dark quartz. Heavy-use family kitchens here get an honest conversation about edge chipping and overhang support rather than the thinnest profile available.

The room is genuinely square and the units are plumb, so the visit is more about the building than about the kitchen. New-build rooms are genuinely square, but they are dot-and-dab plasterboard, and the taped internal angle is where it goes wrong - the board bellies at the corner and the run picks up a few millimetres over the last 300mm. No stone is ever cut from a plan.

On these streets the housing is post-war council block, 1980s dock-edge housing and 2010s onwards residential tower. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered from the Essex patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room

Estate blocks have small lifts and long deck walkways; the new towers have a service lift but need a permit-to-work and a booked slot from the managing agent.

The realistic answer on a main road is an early slot, a spotter on the van and pieces staged in one movement rather than several trips. A templater circling for a space arrives late into a slot that was already tight, and the drawing is what suffers. Two hours is the realistic figure.

What gets asked for here

This is not the local speciality and there is no point saying otherwise: worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop design & quotation is what the housing here actually asks for. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way regardless.

Questions

Worktop templating in Shadwell

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Shadwell?

Yes. Shadwell is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E1. It is run from the Essex side, covering Essex & East London. The realistic answer on a main road is an early slot, a spotter on the van and pieces staged in one movement rather than several trips. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. It goes on the job sheet for the fitting crew. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Shadwell change how worktop templating works?

Dot-and-dab plasterboard bellies at a taped internal angle, so the run picks up a few millimetres over the last 300mm and a plan-angle mitre will not close. The template records that corner as it is, so the mitre closes tight instead of being cut to a theoretical 90 degrees. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. Heavy-use family kitchens here get an honest conversation about edge chipping and overhang support rather than the thinnest profile available.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Shadwell?

The through road is a red route and the market street is closed to vehicles during trading, so timing the drop matters more than distance. Estate blocks have small lifts and long deck walkways; the new towers have a service lift but need a permit-to-work and a booked slot from the managing agent. The lift has to be booked and blanketed before anything moves, and that booking needs to cover the old tops coming out as well as the new stone going in. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. That is part of what the visit is for. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is Shadwell really a worktop templating area?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop design & quotation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Where an annexe has been built or converted, its floor and its walls are newer than the main house and behave differently under the same run. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. Appliances on site, not on order. Households sharing a house tend to want two prep areas rather than one, which usually means an island as well as a perimeter run. Two to three hours on site, with the sink, tap and hob physically present. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.

Why do two Shadwell kitchens the same size price differently?

Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. The drawing leaves site complete. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A lightweight stud partition will not carry a breakfast bar or a peninsula end, and stone finds that out faster than laminate ever did. The laser plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. That is why the visit takes two or three hours. Boards taped or skimmed and finished, units fixed back to the wall and levelled off, and the appliances on site - the wall must be at its final thickness on template day, so no tiler or splashback fitter gets ahead of the worktop. Where a landlord or housing provider is involved there is a specification to meet and a process to follow, and both are settled before a date is offered. The templater needs the sink, tap and hob on site, and a Belfast sink installed at its final height. No stone is cut from a plan.
