Kitchen worktops in Whitechapel
Estate and terrace kitchens are compact and usually closed off, running 2m to 2.6m along one wall, and many are set up for a large household with a full-size cooker and a second fridge in the run. New towers along the main road have developer-fitted open-plan kitchens with an island, often replaced within a few years.

The housing stock
What we are usually working with in Whitechapel
Internal partitions are dense block finished in a hard sand and cement plaster, which is unforgiving to drill and unforgiving to make good. Height is set off the units and the hob, not off the tile line that was there before. Old walls take a scribed upstand better than a rigid panel.
The main road is a red route with a street market along it for most of the week, so unloading is via side turnings and a longer carry.
Kitchens are compact and standardised, which makes the fixed template, fabrication and fitting lines a larger share of the total than the stone. Fixings into concrete go in with proper anchors, and the dust is contained rather than swept up afterwards. What the building will take decides how it is fixed.
What we are usually templating in is Victorian terrace, 1930s and post-war estate block and 2015 onwards high-rise apartment. They fail in different places, which is why the survey looks at different things.
Access. New residential towers require a booked loading bay slot, a lift protection booking with concierge, and often a delivery window outside peak hours.
There is nothing to visit in Whitechapel. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.

The building, and what it does to the job
The meters sit in the hall or under the stairs on the way through, so the carry passes a cupboard door that has to be shut and protected before anything moves. Lath-and-plaster and bowed brickwork mean we template for scribes rather than straight cuts, and each piece is offered up and eased in rather than dropped straight down. Old tops were scribed to a wall that has moved since.
It is two different trades on one postcode: hand-carried small pieces into old estate kitchens, and booked service lifts and island slabs in the new towers.
Whitechapel in the housing figures
Locally owner-occupation is well below the London average. An upstand survives a change of tenant; full-height stone is a longer bet on the same wall. Cut to the wall as found.
What gets asked for here
Replacing one plot years after handover is the problem nobody plans for, because a quartz colour can be reordered and a granite block cannot. Where the same panel repeats across units it is cut as a set, so a damaged one can be swapped for its twin. Cut with the tops while the batch is open.

Questions
Working in Whitechapel
01Are you fitting stone worktops in Whitechapel?
Yes. Estate and terrace kitchens are compact and usually closed off, running 2m to 2.6m along one wall, and many are set up for a large household with a full-size cooker and a second fridge in the run. New towers along the main road have developer-fitted open-plan kitchens with an island, often replaced within a few years. The goods lift has its own booking sheet, and a bay slot without a lift slot only gets the stone as far as the lobby. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. A timed bay does not cover a strip-out and a fit.
02Which kitchens in Whitechapel do you end up in most often?
Victorian terrace, 1930s and post-war estate block and 2015 onwards high-rise apartment. Entry-phone access, a booked lift and a parking bay near the entrance all have to be arranged before a date is confirmed. The carry is the constraint. The age of the house sets the pace of it.
03Do you hit access problems in Whitechapel?
The main road is a red route with a street market along it for most of the week, so unloading is via side turnings and a longer carry. New residential towers require a booked loading bay slot, a lift protection booking with concierge, and often a delivery window outside peak hours. A car ceiling at 2.2m sets the tallest thing that will stand in it, and the trap panel and light fitting take a slice off even that. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. The opening is measured on the diagonal, not across the frame.
04Which of your services does Whitechapel ask for most?
Worktop installation, worktop replacement and worktop splashbacks & upstands, in that order. New-build kitchens are usually smaller than the plan suggests once the appliances are in, so the usable run is shorter than the drawn run. Splashbacks and upstands are cut from the same slab run at the same time, which is the only way the batch actually matches. Cut as a set, so one can replace another. It is two different trades on one postcode: hand-carried small pieces into old estate kitchens, and booked service lifts and island slabs in the new towers.
05What decides the price of a worktop in Whitechapel?
Waterfall ends are cut in sequence off the length either side of the top so the vein carries down the leg, and that sequence is gone the moment a piece has to be recut. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. The units stay, the surface changes. A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. It is usually what pushes a job towards a 100mm upstand instead of a full-height panel, because an upstand rides what a panel exposes. Mitred returns come from one place in the slab. Expect material from £110 per square metre supply only, with templating, fabrication and fitting itemised on their own lines rather than folded into one figure.
06Can you fit a worktop in a Whitechapel flat?
One staircase can serve an owner on the first floor and a managed tenancy on the second, so the access arrangement changes at every landing while the building stays the same. A 100mm upstand is the low-maintenance answer, and full-height stone is the one that has to be committed to early. Whoever specifies it signs the drawing. Mention the building when you book. The lift, the stair turn and any freeholder notice then go into the plan instead of turning up on the day.
07Is templating a separate visit from fitting?
A template on a normal kitchen takes two to three hours in the room. The fitting itself is one visit: a plain run is a morning, an island with splashbacks takes most of the day. The template produces a drawing, and the workshop cuts to that drawing once you agree it. These kitchens give three metres of usable wall and no more, so a dimension out by a few millimetres costs a whole run rather than a piece. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. Twenty millimetres of packing behind a panel is not a fix.
08What if the stone gets chipped on the way into a Whitechapel kitchen?
Door frames and the stair route are protected too, since most contact happens on the way in. Most breakages happen on the carry, which is why the route is walked and measured before anything comes off the van. The workmanship guarantee runs 5 years on every kitchen we fit. A goods lift booked by the hour puts a clock on the whole delivery, so pieces go up in a planned order and nothing is handled twice. We walk the route with a tape and protect it end to end before the first piece is lifted. Pieces wait on trestles until the fitters call for them.
09Can a Whitechapel worktop be done in one piece?
There are only ever a few legal positions, and the one taken is furthest from the light. A join sits over a cabinet gable. It never spans a gap and never runs through a cut-out. Join count and position are settled from the template drawing rather than improvised on the fitting day. Everything on an island is fed from underneath, extraction, a socket run, a hob and sometimes a waste, and each of them wants its hole before the top is bonded down. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. Carcasses have to be sound first.
10Can the price change after templating?
What is quoted is what the drawing says, and the figure does not move unless the drawing does. The edge profile is its own line, so a shaped edge and a square one are two different figures. Cut-outs, edge profile and join count are itemised, so taking one out removes a line rather than starting an argument. Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. A tall panel that fits at the worktop will stand off the wall at the top unless the wall is dubbed out or the panel is scribed. The pier takes a joint against it, not across it.
