The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. We check who is entitled to approve it.

An island often runs in one piece where a wall run cannot. A mitred join at a corner is a different job from a butt join along a run, and they are not priced the same. Dark and heavily veined stone shows a join more than a pale even one, which is worth knowing before the slab is picked. An island is a single visible piece with four finished edges and no wall to hide against, so it is the piece the whole kitchen is judged on. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. Mitres are cut as pairs, off one setting.

On a replacement the old top comes off in the morning and the new stone is down and sealed the same day. Taking the old tops off and disposing of them is its own line on the quote rather than something folded into the stone price. The carcasses stay. Only the surface changes. Bay bookings are usually an hour or two, which is fine for unloading and no use at all as a place to leave the van for a day. Where the carry is long the pieces are strapped for handling rather than for the shortest route off the tail lift. One movement off the van starts with how it went on.

Where a top takes wine, oil and lemon most days, the non-porous materials ask least of the household. Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. A seal is not waterproofing. It only buys time to wipe a spill up. Entry-phone access, a booked lift and a parking bay near the entrance all have to be arranged before a date is confirmed. The notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius, because a square internal corner there is where a top fails. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out.

It is quoted by area like the worktop, so a long run is a material line rather than a trim. A full-height piece shows a wall that is out more than an upstand does, over the extra height. If it is a decision for later, say so at the template: the match is a question about the batch. The kitchen is a narrow room off the hall with the window at the far end, so the run is a galley by construction rather than by choice. Short runs nest tightly, so a compact kitchen often comes out of one slab with the upstands taken from its offcuts. Nested to the route first and the slab second.
