Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. The load plan follows from it. Original joinery is deep and stands proud of the plaster, so the run is plotted to the units rather than to the wall behind them. Islands here regularly run longer than a slab, so the join is nested to sit over an internal gable and positioned so it does not run through the hob cut-out, and on a heavily veined stone we nest the island and the back run together so the movement relates across the room. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out. Multi-room jobs like this are three or four separate templates on the same visit, and the pantry and utility pieces should be cut from the same slab batch as the island for consistency.

Wide tree-lined roads with in-and-out driveways and gates, so vehicle access is among the best in Brent, but the front doors sit above several steps and the internal route to the rear is long. Carrying through the house means protecting the whole route first: floor boarded, banister padded, and the front door held open on a wedge rather than by hand. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. It is settled on the bench, not on site.

Batching several kitchens together is the one situation where buying a whole slab is cheaper per kitchen rather than more expensive. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Same slab run, or it is not a match. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Nested for the job in front of us.

Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

Sill height gets settled with the template on site, because it is one of the few dimensions nobody has measured before we arrive. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Radiused, polished, and clear of the joins. The range or Aga, the sink and the tap all need to be confirmed by model before nesting, because their clearances and hole positions set where the island can be cut. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.
