Earl's Court kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Nothing in a house of this age is square, and the kitchen is usually the part that has been altered most often. Taking the old tops off is also the first honest look at what has been going on underneath them. Stone is far heavier than what is coming off.
Where flats have been reconverted into larger units the kitchen usually opens into the reception, which brings a peninsula with a 300mm overhang and the need for a supported cantilever.
Kerbside is under permit and CPZ control with heavy competition, and the one-way system around the old exhibition site adds a long approach. The huge stucco terraces here were cut into flats and bedsits decades ago, so most kitchens are small rooms carved out of former bedrooms or landings, taking a 2.0-2.8m run with an integrated washing machine eating a bay.
Cornice, picture rails and deep skirting survive in converted rooms, so the run stands off the wall and the back edge follows the units rather than the plaster. In most Victorian terraces the kitchen sits in the back addition, so you get a narrow galley with one outside wall and nothing square to work off. Sound carcasses are the one condition.
The buildings themselves are mostly 1860s-70s stucco terrace subdivided into flats, purpose-built Edwardian block, former hotel converted back to residential and garden square terrace. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job
Expect a fifth or sixth-floor walk-up with no lift at least once a month here, and price the labour honestly rather than discovering it at delivery.

Getting stone into the room
High density of flats above shops and above each other means communal front doors, no lift in most stucco conversions, and steep original stairs with a half-landing window that dictates the maximum length you can swing.
Stone goes up on edge, and it is the half-landing turn rather than the flight itself that sets the maximum piece. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. The strip-out is planned around it.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Earl's Court
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Earl's Court on your patch?
Yes. Earl's Court is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW5. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Kensington and Chelsea. A controlled parking zone means either a visitor permit sorted in advance or a suspended bay, and a suspension is applied for days ahead rather than on the morning. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. The waste run is planned, not improvised. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop replacement in Earl's Court be any different from anywhere else?
Lease conditions and the other flats in the building decide when noisy work can happen, so the fitting day has a start and a finish that are not ours to set. What the old top has been hiding is usually a floor that settled towards the back and units that were never fixed back to the wall. Units kept, surface changed, one day. Expect a fifth or sixth-floor walk-up with no lift at least once a month here, and price the labour honestly rather than discovering it at delivery.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Earl's Court?
High density of flats above shops and above each other means communal front doors, no lift in most stucco conversions, and steep original stairs with a half-landing window that dictates the maximum length you can swing. Kerbside is under permit and CPZ control with heavy competition, and the one-way system around the old exhibition site adds a long approach. Stone goes up on edge, and it is the half-landing turn rather than the flight itself that sets the maximum piece. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. The strip-out is planned around it.
Is Earl's Court mostly worktop replacement work for you?
Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop templating and worktop installation. Where a single building holds several small kitchens, the work arrives as one job rather than four, and it should be cut off the same slab run so the batches genuinely match. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project. Batching several kitchens together is the one situation where buying a whole slab is cheaper per kitchen rather than more expensive. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
The free end is what needs deciding early: square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall to the floor, and a waterfall is cut in sequence off the same part of the slab. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. Height change is checked before we cut. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Earl's Court?
Dot-and-dab plasterboard sounds solid and is hollow behind, so anything fixed through it has to hit a dab or a batten rather than a void. This is the commonest reason a replacement turns out to need more than a straight swap. Found at template, not on fit day. Have a plumber booked to disconnect the sink, tap and waste first thing and reconnect after we have gone, and clear the hallway and stairs completely so we can carry slabs through the house. Where the owner is not local, the decisions happen remotely, so photographs and a clear itemised drawing carry more weight than a showroom visit ever would. A replacement keeps the units and changes the surface, which is the least disruptive way to do this in an occupied property. Sound carcasses are the condition.
