A skip, a delivery lorry or a run of scaffolding takes the frontage the van needed, so the street is worth a look the day before rather than on the morning. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. The van is packed to suit the walk at the other end. There is nothing to drive to and nothing to pick up, because both visits are to the property itself.

Windows are large industrial openings with deep sills, and a run finishing at one meets a reveal a full brick deep. The kitchen is open plan and the island is often long enough to need a join, and it sits in the middle of the room where every edge is visible, so the join goes over a gable and usually under the hob line where the eye does not follow it. Walls out of plumb are cut for at the bench. A downstand over a run caps wall unit height before it caps anything else, and the splashback then takes its height from the steel rather than from the units. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. A relief that deep changes how the piece is lifted.

Open-tread and cantilevered stairs give nothing to lean a piece against, so the whole weight stays on the crew for the full length of the flight. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. An access join is dressed to the same standard as any other. Where parking runs down both sides the road is left as a single lane, and a van standing in it has to be somewhere it does not stop a bin lorry. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. A timed unload is planned into the rack before it leaves.

Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop installation. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. The annexe top comes off the main kitchen slab. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Small kitchens are more bench work per square metre.

Where an overhang is too deep for steel on its own the choice is a leg at the end or a bracket underneath, and a bracket that lands where a knee goes is worse than no bracket at all. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. Cut-outs are machined with the piece bedded down. Expect £110 to £550 per square metre for material supply only, with templating, fabrication and fitting on their own lines.

Encased steel is always bigger than the steel inside it, so the casing is what gets plotted, and a casing is rarely square to the wall it sits against. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. Cut to the plotted line, not the nominal one. The island layout, including whether the ends are mitred down to the floor, needs settling before cutting, since mitred ends are cut in sequence with the top and dry-assembled as one unit. The person choosing the surface is not the person who will cook on it, which argues for a finish that absorbs ordinary wear rather than one that rewards careful housekeeping. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. One approval, one cut, one delivery.

Stone does not flex, so a run that rocks on its carcasses rocks just as badly once it is stone. A long top on units that were shimmed once and never checked is the commonest version of this, and it is cheap to fix beforehand. Levelling belongs in the carcasses, on their own legs and packers. A brick pier standing into the run divides it in two, and the join goes against the pier where a clear wall would have needed no join at all. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. The mitre is cut to the angle we found, not to ninety.

Chips at an edge or a corner are the usual form, because that is where stone is least supported. The workmanship guarantee runs 5 years on every kitchen we fit. A remake goes back through the same cutting and polishing, so it is a return visit rather than a patch. A handrail that has to come off before a piece will pass is twenty minutes at the start of the day, and it goes back on the wall before we leave. The maximum piece length is fixed at drawing stage and every join is placed over a cabinet gable from there. The longest piece is capped in the workshop, deliberately.

Upstands and splashbacks are templated after the worktop is down and settled, so they are a separate visit. Templating and fitting are two visits, not one, and the gap between them is when the stone is actually cut. Nothing is payable in advance of the template. Exposed brick and steel is the whole job here, because neither of them presents a flat plane to scribe to. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. Nothing is machined until the drawing matches the building.

Every piece goes in by hand and stone does not bend, so the tightest turn on the route sets the longest piece. Doorways, the newel post and the handrail usually take the room away, rather than the stairs themselves. A join forced by the route still sits over a gable, so it is no poorer a join for that. Spindles and a newel cap stand proud of the string, so the usable width on a turn is measured to the handrail rather than to the wall behind it. The workshop cuts to that constraint, so a piece leaves the bench already sized to reach where it is going. Nothing leaves the bench longer than the way in allows.
