Volume work tends to live at the entry end of the range, and the entry end is genuine stone rather than a compromise, since the lowest supply figure we quote is a sintered surface and not a thin laminate pretending to be one. Movement across three metres is not visible on a hand sample.

Sockets set into the end panel keep the top clear, but they sit below the stone and are cut into the panel by the fitter rather than machined into the worktop. A shape like that nests kindly on a slab, so more of what gets bought ends up on the units and the rate per square metre behaves much as the brochure says it will. Long unbroken lengths are what make a plain stone look dear. Material alone is £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are never folded into that figure.

A deep scribe comes out of the nest, so how far the stone has to be relieved changes which part of the slab the piece is cut from. A run that sits under strong sun for hours every afternoon suits a surface built to be stable in daylight, because a resin-bound stone is made for indoor use and sustained sunlight is the one thing it was never designed around. The wall decides the scribe and the scribe decides the depth. Send the island size and the perimeter lengths, tell us the ceiling and window arrangement, and say whether the pod services come up through the floor. Quartz is the sensible default in a rental: nothing to seal, nothing to maintain, and nothing an incoming tenant needs briefing on. That changes which questions are worth asking about the stone, because somebody staying put wants to know how a honed face marks in five years and somebody selling wants to know how it photographs next spring. What comes out goes by the same route the new stone comes in by, which is why that route is walked before anything is lifted. Where parking runs down both sides the road is left as a single lane, and a van standing in it has to be somewhere it does not stop a bin lorry. The unused stone rides back unless you want it, and a granite remnant makes a chopping board, a hearth or a window board instead of becoming waste. Thirty millimetre stone unloads slowly and thin stone does not.

A remake goes back through the same cutting and polishing, so it is a return visit rather than a patch. A piece is never laid flat across a gap while it is moved, because that is how stone cracks unaided. Stone cannot be filled and made good the way laminate can, so a damaged piece is remade rather than patched. A handrail that has to come off before a piece will pass is twenty minutes at the start of the day, and it goes back on the wall before we leave. Sintered stone at twelve millimetres weighs roughly half what thirty millimetre granite weighs, so a punishing route can genuinely rule one material in and another out. No colour and no edge is adjustable once a piece is machined.

The bowl position has to be settled before templating, since the grooves are set out from it. Grooves and an undermounted bowl are usually specified together, since the grooves are run to the bowl edge. Which side of the bowl they go is about how you stand at the sink, and it is settled before cutting. These read as easy from the outside and rarely are, since the flat entrance is often tighter than the goods lift. Which stone belongs on top of all that is a separate question from the building itself, and it is the one with a figure attached, because supply alone runs from £110 to £550 per square metre before a single cut has been made.
