The housing stock
What we are usually working with in Fish Island
Open plan means long uninterrupted runs and an island in the middle of the room with every edge on show. Almost everything that makes a fitting day hard is a property of the building rather than of the stone. The whole run is dry-fitted before any adhesive is opened.
Access is off narrow industrial roads with working yards and gates that get locked outside hours, so a delivery slot has to be agreed with the building manager. Older converted units often have a wide roller shutter at ground level, which is the easiest slab entry anywhere in the borough, but the upper live-work floors are reached by an open industrial stair.
Many of these kitchens are a fitted pod dropped into open floor, so three sides are free and only the fourth is ever scribed. Scribes of fifteen to twenty millimetres are normal here, so each piece is offered up two or three times before it beds. Old floors get packed, not argued with.
What the job sheets keep listing is converted industrial unit, live-work warehouse and 2015 onwards riverside apartment block. The template reads them differently even where the layout looks identical.
There is nothing to visit in Fish Island. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
