Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. Upstands leave the bench in lengths, not as one run. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Remakes for our error are ours to carry.

Disposal means it goes in the van, not into the garden to wait for a collection. Tiling bonded to the wall behind usually comes away with the old top, so that wall is agreed beforehand. On a replacement the old top comes off in the morning and the new stone is down and sealed the same day. Where a road is shut for filming or for works the diversion adds distance to the carry even when parking itself was never the problem. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. A short window means one pass, so the rack suits one pass.

Where a top takes wine, oil and lemon most days, the non-porous materials ask least of the household. Pieces are sized to the tightest turn on the route before anything is nested to the slab. A settled corner leaves the bench as a real angle.

Where there is a lift, whether it can be booked out and padded matters as much as its size. What decides it is not the width of the stairwell but the length of piece that can be turned in it. Doorways, the newel post and the handrail usually take the room away, rather than the stairs themselves. A rated load sounds ample until three lengths of granite and two fitters are standing on it, so the stone goes up one piece at a time. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. Nesting follows the route, not the other way round.
