One kitchen in Stratford might take a single run along a back wall and the next an island as well, which is why bathroom worktop fitting is never quoted blind. New apartment kitchens dominate and are open-plan against a wall of the living space, 2.6m to 3.2m of run with integrated appliances and a slim breakfast bar; owners replace the developer laminate top for stone within a few years. The older terraces to the west still have back-addition galley kitchens of around 2.4m. Guessing at this stage would only put a wrong number in front of you, so we do not do it.
The rear wall of the addition carries both the back door and the window, which leaves very little unbroken wall for a run to sit against. A short piece carries an overflow, a waste and a sealant line, and any one of the three can spoil it. We seat the basin. Your plumber connects it.
Cornice runs round the head of the wall, so the wall units stop under it and the splashback band is trapped between two things that are not going to move. Where a bedroom has been divided to make a bathroom the window sits off centre to the new room and the vanity ends up under it, which puts the window board in the order rather than outside it. Pressed steel baths and stone vanities are a common pairing.
Locally the mix runs to Victorian terrace, 1960s-70s estate and 2012 onwards high-rise apartment. The age of the shell tells us more than the age of the kitchen does.
