Olympia kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. Pieces are cut, mitred, machined and dry-assembled on the bench before anything is loaded onto a van. The drawing decides it before the saw does.
The streets around the exhibition halls mix family terraces with lower-ground kitchens and a scatter of former studio houses that have double-height rooms and unusually tall kitchen walls, where clients often want full-height stone rather than an upstand. Terrace kitchens run 3-3.6m with a modest island, and the studio properties throw up one long uninterrupted wall that suits a single-piece splashback. Event days at the exhibition centre bring road closures, traffic management and full parking suspensions on the surrounding streets, so check the event calendar before booking a fit.
Walls are thick, lime-plastered and built in a soft brick, so they take a scribe well and take a fixing badly. The galley run down a side-return usually measures longer than a slab will give us, so a join is designed in from the start and nested to land over a cabinet gable rather than wherever the material happens to run out. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out.
On these streets the housing is Victorian terrace, mansion flat, artists' studio house and mixed-use block near the exhibition centre. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
True everywhere
Worktop fabrication, in short
- Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
- Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
- A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
- Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.
Covered on our west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
The shape of the run
Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw.

What gets asked for here
Of everything we do around here, this is the one that comes up most, with worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands behind it.

Getting stone into the room
Otherwise the streets are ordinary CPZ terraces with front paths and steps, and the usual hallway-and-newel problem.

Getting stone into a Olympia kitchen
Event days at the exhibition centre bring road closures, traffic management and full parking suspensions on the surrounding streets, so check the event calendar before booking a fit. Otherwise the streets are ordinary CPZ terraces with front paths and steps, and the usual hallway-and-newel problem.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop fabrication in Olympia
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Olympia?
Yes. Olympia is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are W14. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Hammersmith and Fulham. Where an event closes the road entirely, the van cannot be moved once it is in, which is a different problem from not being able to park at all. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. The load plan follows from it. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Olympia change how worktop fabrication works?
Rooms are tall with deep window reveals, and a run finishing into a reveal is templated to it rather than assumed square. The galley run down a side-return usually measures longer than a slab will give us, so a join is designed in from the start and nested to land over a cabinet gable rather than wherever the material happens to run out. Settled on the drawing, cut once. Check whether there is a show on before you book the day, because an exhibition closure can put you 400m from the front door with a full A-frame.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Olympia?
Event days at the exhibition centre bring road closures, traffic management and full parking suspensions on the surrounding streets, so check the event calendar before booking a fit. Otherwise the streets are ordinary CPZ terraces with front paths and steps, and the usual hallway-and-newel problem. Door width, hall width and the diagonal at the turn are three separate measurements, and it is the diagonal that catches people out. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. It is settled on the bench, not on site.
Is worktop fabrication the job you do most in Olympia?
Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Proven on the bench before dispatch. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Nested for the job in front of us.
Why do two Olympia kitchens the same size price differently?
Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Radiused, polished, and clear of the joins. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. Sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch, whoever supplied them. Changes cost a piece, not a tweak.
