Roehampton kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1950s modernist slab and point blockInterwar cottage estateRoehampton village Georgian and Victorian

There is nearly always a boxed soil stack or a service riser in a corner of the run, and it is rarely mentioned at enquiry. The workshop works to the template drawing and to the measured route, in that order. The drawing decides it before the saw does.

The postwar estate flats have small standardised kitchens, typically 2m by 3m, with services boxed at one end and a fixed sink and cooker position, so refits are straight runs with a return. The older village properties and the cottage estate houses have conventional rear kitchens with more scope for an L or a small peninsula.

In the tower and slab blocks the lift car depth is the hard limit, anything over about 2m has to be cut to fit the car, so the joint position is decided by the building, not the kitchen.

Rear access through a garden or a shared path means long pieces can usually come in whole from the back. The notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius, because a square internal corner there is where a top fails. The bench proves it before the van moves.

What we are usually templating in is 1950s modernist slab and point block, Interwar cottage estate and Roehampton village Georgian and Victorian. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.

True everywhere

Worktop fabrication, in short

  • Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
  • Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
  • A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
  • Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.

Covered on our south west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room

The slab blocks are set back from the road behind landscaping with long approach paths, controlled entry and lifts that are undersized for stone, and the upper floors make a stair carry impractical. Booked lift access and an early slot are essential.

What gets asked for here

These kitchens tend to be compact and reasonably square, so the fixed template, fabrication and fitting lines are a larger share of the total than the stone is. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.

Second or third on the list around here, after worktop replacement. Same visit, same bench, same crew, same lead time.

Getting stone into a Roehampton kitchen

The slab blocks are set back from the road behind landscaping with long approach paths, controlled entry and lifts that are undersized for stone, and the upper floors make a stair carry impractical. Booked lift access and an early slot are essential.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop fabrication in Roehampton

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in Roehampton, or just list it?

Yes. Roehampton is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW15. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Wandsworth. Where the van can pull up level with the gate the pieces are handled the fewest times, which is what actually protects them. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. The load plan follows from it. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about worktop fabrication in Roehampton?

Walls are dense block or in-situ concrete with a bonded plaster, so the bottom course of tiles brings plaster with it when the old top comes off. The kitchen is usually a small square or L-shaped room reached through a narrow entrance lobby and a standard internal doorway, so the limit on piece length is the turn out of the lobby, and short runs mean joins are often avoidable altogether if the layout is nested tightly. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out. In the tower and slab blocks the lift car depth is the hard limit, anything over about 2m has to be cut to fit the car, so the joint position is decided by the building, not the kitchen.

Is access a problem in Roehampton?

The slab blocks are set back from the road behind landscaping with long approach paths, controlled entry and lifts that are undersized for stone, and the upper floors make a stair carry impractical. Booked lift access and an early slot are essential. Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. Once the cut-outs are machined there is no going back on it.

Is worktop fabrication common in Roehampton?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Landlord work is scheduled around void periods, so the whole thing is a fixed window and the template date matters as much as the fitting date. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Same slab run, or it is not a match. Quartz suits let property well: no sealing, no annual maintenance, and nothing an incoming tenant has to be told to look after. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Proven on the bench before dispatch.

What decides the price of a worktop in Roehampton?

Peninsulas frequently land on a lightweight partition or on units that were never fixed down, and stone needs proper support under it before it goes on. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. The bench proves it before the van does. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What do I need to sort out first?

Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. Radiused, polished, and clear of the joins. The stack boxing needs to be in its final form and the sink and hob on site before we machine, since a boxing that gets re-clad afterwards throws the notch out. These kitchens tend to be compact and reasonably square, so the fixed template, fabrication and fitting lines are a larger share of the total than the stone is. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.
