It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. The yard reads the access note before it racks anything. Ceiling heights are held to the minimum the plan allows, so the panel between worktop and wall units is a short piece. Piece size is set by the lift car, not by the slab. The bow in an old wall is cut for, not sanded out. Taped internal angles in plasterboard belly at the corner, so the run picks up a few millimetres over the last 300mm and a plan-angle mitre will not close. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. The mitre is cut to the angle we found, not to ninety.

Where the parking court sits behind the block the carry crosses open ground and gets boarded, because loaded trolleys and block paving do not agree. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. Edge profiles are finished before the stone is ever stood on end. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. One approval, one cut, one delivery.

Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because the openings are machined rather than chopped out on the wall. An upstand covers the gap where the worktop meets a wall that is not flat, which is its real job. A full-height piece behind the hob has to allow for the extractor, so that gets settled first. Every flat on the floor is the same plan handed left and right, so the room is predictable even where the building is not. We work to the internal depth of the car and the diagonal you can actually stand a piece up on with the doors closed, then nest to that, which routinely turns a two-piece kitchen into a three-piece one with an extra join over a gable. A scribe of twenty millimetres is machined, not fettled on site.

Templating, fabrication and fitting are the same three lines whether the stone came from us or from you. Remnants bought elsewhere are the awkward case, because the drawing is then made to fit the stone. Stone cut to somebody else’s drawing cannot usefully be re-cut to yours. A specification repeated across several plots has to be repeatable, which quietly rules out the natural stones where no two slabs match. Repeat pieces are cut from one drawing set, so what arrives on the bench is the same every time. Plot two has to match plot nine.

Join count and position are settled from the template drawing rather than improvised on the fitting day. Join count is a question about slab size and run length, nothing else. There are only ever a few legal positions, and the one taken is furthest from the light. The two runs are read against each other rather than against the floor, so they are set to one datum taken across the aisle instead of measured up from the boards. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. Dry-assembled to the shape of your run.

A piece travels on edge, never flat, because on edge is how stone of that length carries its own weight. Hoisting through a window is occasionally the answer, and it is a decision made at the template, not improvised on the fitting day. Booked delivery windows on a managed estate run to an hour, and a worktop install does not happen inside an hour. The maximum piece length is fixed at drawing stage and every join is placed over a cabinet gable from there. The cut list answers to the way in first.
