Yes. Tooting is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW17. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Wandsworth. A shared-use bay allows a paid stay up to a set maximum, and that maximum is routinely shorter than the working day the job needs. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. Packing takes its cue from the distance to the door. There is nothing to drive to and nothing to pick up, because both visits are to the property itself.

Door openings and the hall were set to a generous standard, so a long piece turns in from the front without being stood on end to do it. The kitchen is usually a small square or L-shaped room reached through a narrow entrance lobby and a standard internal doorway, so the limit on piece length is the turn out of the lobby, and short runs mean joins are often avoidable altogether if the layout is nested tightly. Thin partitions get shallower overhangs, decided in the shop. Level has to hold across the whole room rather than along one wall, or a floor that falls end to end shows as a step where two pieces meet. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. Upstands leave the bench in lengths, not as one run.

Open-tread and cantilevered stairs give nothing to lean a piece against, so the whole weight stays on the crew for the full length of the flight. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. A piece too long for the stairs is a piece cut twice. Camera enforcement gives nobody the chance to explain, where an officer on foot at least sees a tail lift down and stone coming off it. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. What comes off first is settled before the doors shut.

Not particularly. It would be easy to say yes and leave it there. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is about what people have here rather than how it gets done. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Extended households run kitchens hard, and that pushes the specification towards granite or sintered stone rather than a light quartz. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. The spares are cut while the slab is still open. Two households cooking in one kitchen means two of most things, and the run has to carry a second sink or a second oven without losing its working length. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. One kept offcut saves a whole flat later.

Peninsula tops are often the longest single piece in the kitchen, so if anything in the layout is going to force a second slab it is generally this one. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. Edge work on a return matches edge work on a length. Reckon on £110 to £550 per square metre for the material supply only, with templating, fabrication and fitting itemised separately.

A floor that falls across the depth of a run rather than along it tips the carcasses front to back, and packing the front feet changes the overhang while it fixes the level. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. Radius first, polish second, joins nowhere near. The stack boxing needs to be in its final form and the sink and hob on site before we machine, since a boxing that gets re-clad afterwards throws the notch out. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Changes cost a piece, not a tweak.

The workmanship guarantee runs 5 years on every kitchen we fit. A piece is never laid flat across a gap while it is moved, because that is how stone cracks unaided. Door frames and the stair route are protected too, since most contact happens on the way in. A handrail that has to come off before a piece will pass is twenty minutes at the start of the day, and it goes back on the wall before we leave. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. Handling points are marked on the crate before it is strapped.

Two kitchens the same length can be far apart, because material, edge and cut-outs move independently of size. Plumbing, gas and electrical work are not in the figure, because we do not do them. Material is quoted supply only and templating, fabrication and fitting sit on their own lines, so it is visible which part is stone and which is labour. Once the carcasses are levelled the gap under the plinth varies along the run, and that varying gap is the honest record of what the floor is doing. The workshop cuts to the plotted line rather than to a nominal dimension, which is why a scribe edge leaves the bench deliberately oversize. A notch and a cut-out never share the same span.

Variation past what packing can take up has to be corrected in the carcasses before we cut, because the template records the units as they stand. If the carcasses are corrected, the template is taken again, since a drawing off units that then moved is worthless. Levelling belongs in the carcasses, on their own legs and packers. A wall line that runs level over a floor that does not means the finish closes up on the plinth at one end, which is joinery rather than something the stone can answer. It also decides where in the slab the piece is taken from, because a deep relief needs material behind it that a straight edge never asks for. The casing gets plotted. The steel inside it does not.

A piece with a bowl and a hob cut into it is the fragile one, and it is handled accordingly. A boiling tap needs a hole of its own and a cupboard below for the tank, so the units change too. Nothing is cut out in the kitchen. Cutting a bowl on site is how worktops get cracked. A peninsula is an island with one end tied to a run, which means the join between them has to be planned rather than allowed to happen. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. Offcut sizes are decided before the first cut.
