The questions that decide bathroom worktop fitting in Tooting are dull ones about doorways, corners and what the floor is doing, and they are asked early for good reason. Small early cottage-estate houses have compact rear kitchens where a straight 2.7m run and a return is the whole layout, while the larger Victorian terraces off the main roads take a rear infill with a peninsula. Multi-generation households often ask for a second hob run or a separate prep area. If you are not sure which of those describes your kitchen, that is normal, and it is exactly what the template visit settles.
There is nearly always a boxed soil stack or a service riser in a corner of the run, and it is rarely mentioned at enquiry. What that does to a vanity is push the whole job into a narrow depth, because a bathroom takes the same stone as a kitchen in about two thirds of the width. Small enough to carry, awkward enough to plan.
Meters were moved out to a box on the flank wall on a later programme, and the cupboard they came out of is usually still standing in the corner. Dense concrete and blockwork hold a bracket firmly, so a wall-hung unit is secure, though nothing can be chased in to hide a pipe. A boxed riser in the corner is the usual obstacle upstairs.
The stock on this patch is Victorian terrace, Edwardian cottage estate house, Above-shop flat and Postwar block. Which one you have changes the order of the day more than the design does.
