Forestdale kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Kitchens in this stock are compact and reasonably square, which makes the fixed lines a larger share of the total than the material is. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. Siliconed to the top, never grouted.
A single-period estate of link-detached and terraced houses with a distinctive layout: a narrow kitchen alongside the integral garage, usually a galley of 3m with a hatch or door through to the dining area. Owners frequently take the garage into the kitchen to gain width.
When the garage is absorbed into the kitchen the two floor slabs sit at different levels, so the new units get packed and the worktop line has to be set as one plane across both. Pedestrian-first layout with footpath networks separated from the roads, garage courts and parking areas set away from the houses, so the carry from the van is longer than it looks on a map.
An ex-council house is solidly built to a standard plan, with the kitchen at the rear and a back door next to it. The rear kitchen wall in ex-council flats and maisonettes is commonly dense in-situ concrete or blockwork with a thin skim, which means mechanical fixings are hard work and the splashback is held on adhesive rather than screwed. Decided before fabrication starts.
What turns up on the job sheets is 1960s-70s planned estate housing, link-detached house, flat-roofed terrace and integral-garage detached. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Splashbacks and upstands, in short
- Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
- Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
- Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
- The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.

What gets asked for here
The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop installation, worktop replacement and worktop templating do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

Getting stone into the room
A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. Panels come off the van in one trip where possible, since a tall piece handled repeatedly is a piece asking to be chipped. One trip is always better than three.

Getting stone into a Forestdale kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Forestdale
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Forestdale, or just list it?
Yes. Forestdale is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are CR0. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Croydon. A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. Panels come off the van in one trip where possible, since a tall piece handled repeatedly is a piece asking to be chipped. That is why they are crated the way they are. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop splashbacks & upstands in Forestdale?
An ex-council house is solidly built to a standard plan, with the kitchen at the rear and a back door next to it. That suits a full-height piece, because a large flat panel bonded across its back is more stable on concrete than a run of small tiles ever was. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure. When the garage is absorbed into the kitchen the two floor slabs sit at different levels, so the new units get packed and the worktop line has to be set as one plane across both.
Is access a problem in Forestdale?
Pedestrian-first layout with footpath networks separated from the roads, garage courts and parking areas set away from the houses, so the carry from the van is longer than it looks on a map. A narrow entrance hall with a turn into the back of the house caps the longest piece we can physically get in, whatever the run itself measures. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. Joint positions follow from that.
Is Forestdale really a worktop splashbacks & upstands area?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop replacement and worktop templating. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Landlord work is scheduled around void periods, so the whole thing is a fixed window and the template date matters as much as the fitting date. Splashbacks and upstands are cut from the same slab run at the same time, which is the only way the batch actually matches. Same batch, same run, same day. Quartz suits let property well: no sealing, no annual maintenance, and nothing an incoming tenant has to be told to look after. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Sockets final before template.
What decides the price of a worktop in Forestdale?
The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. The same shape decides where splashback pieces break, and a joint in a corner reads as a detail while one in a clear run reads as a mistake. Corners get their own pieces. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. A tall panel that fits at the worktop will stand off the wall at the top unless the wall is dubbed out or the panel is scribed. Scribed, dubbed out, or set proud. Pick one. Any surface trunking or conduit has to be rerouted or accepted and boxed before templating, because the stone cannot be scribed around a live conduit on site. These kitchens tend to be compact and reasonably square, so the fixed template, fabrication and fitting lines are a larger share of the total than the stone is. Full-height panels need the wall made good first, which is another trade and another timescale. Decided before fabrication, not after.
