South Bank kitchens

The kitchens we meet in South Bank

Most of the questions we get about splashback jobs in South Bank are really questions about the kitchen itself, which is where any sensible answer has to start. Predominantly apartment kitchens in managed buildings: an appliance wall plus a peninsula or a compact island, all within the developer's original layout and with no scope to move services. Stone is chosen to be seen from the living area rather than to work hard. You do not need to know which one you have before you call. We work that out on the survey.

The lift car, the loading bay and the building manager decide the piece sizes here, not the slab. Height is set off the units and the hob, not off the tile line that was there before. Boxed pipework decides the panel width before taste does.

Houses on modern estates are built to a handful of standard plans, so the kitchen is square, predictable and modest in area. A full-height panel is bonded across its back and carried on the upstand line rather than left hanging on adhesive alone. What the wall can take decides how tall the stone goes.

The stock we template in here is 1980s co-operative housing, Riverside tower and Converted commercial building. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

True everywhere

Splashbacks and upstands, in short

  • Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
  • Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
  • The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.
  • Upstands are small pieces, so they usually come out of the offcut the worktop leaves.

The place

Why South Bank is its own job

The questions we ask about a job in South Bank are about the route, the doorways and the walls, not about the finish. Everything moves through a service entrance with a booked goods lift, a signed-in delivery window and often a restriction on working before 9am or after 5pm. Riverside frontages have no vehicle access at all, so the loading dock is at the back of the building. Buildings here have strict rules on wet cutting and dust, so any on-site adjustment needs extraction and a sheeted area agreed with building management in advance. You see the drawing before we cut, and if we have read the room wrong, that is the moment to say so, not the morning the fitters arrive.

The work

What worktop splashbacks & upstands involves

The decision belongs to the quotation stage rather than to the week after the kitchen is finished, because the stone for the wall is taken from the worktop order rather than bought again. Nothing is trimmed on site. The openings and the returns are machined at the workshop, so the drawing has to carry every dimension the wall is going to demand of the piece. You end up with a continuous run of stone from the worktop up, cut from the same slab batch so the colour matches where the two pieces meet.

Fitting them is a couple of hours with no water, gas or electricity touched, which is why it usually comes back as a short return visit. Height is taken from the finished surface up to the underside of the wall units, so a stretch with nothing above it has no obvious answer and gets asked about. The hob is usually a small induction unit on a stud partition, which makes a tall sheet a question of wiping down rather than of heat. Machined to the room, not trimmed to it.

The money

What it costs in South Bank

A full-height splashback costs more than an upstand for the obvious reason and one less obvious one: there is more to scribe and more to machine around. Overhangs, a waterfall end and seating all add machining, and an island is where those decisions cluster. Two quotes can agree on a supply rate of £110 to £550 per square metre and still land a long way apart, because the cut-outs, the joins and the edge profile are priced after it. Ordered with the worktop, and cheaper for it.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The carry, and what it rules out

Piece length is set by the internal diagonal of the lift car, not by the length of the slab. Where the route is tight we break a long splashback at a natural vertical joint instead of forcing one panel through. Joint positions follow from that.

What South Bank asks for

The stock here does not generate much of this. What it generates is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop fabrication. The job itself is surveyed, quoted and fitted exactly as it would be anywhere else we work.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

South Bank in the housing figures

Around South Bank, owner-occupation is well below the London average. The joint to the worktop is siliconed rather than grouted, which matters more in a let property than an owner expects. The stone follows the wall, not the other way round.

Getting stone into a South Bank kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in South Bank

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

01

Do your own fitters come out to South Bank?

Yes. South Bank is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE1. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Lambeth. Where the bay sits some distance from the core, the carry across the car park is the longest leg of the day and gets boarded and lit. Splashbacks are normally the last thing off, so a short parking window is exactly when they get rushed. Where the van has to move, the panels come in first. Your part of it happens entirely at home, with nothing to travel to and nothing to bring back.

02

What do the kitchens in South Bank do to worktop splashbacks & upstands?

Timber-frame construction with plasterboard linings means every fixing has to find a stud, and a peninsula end needs proper support built in beforehand. The plasterboard is genuinely flat here, so a full-height splashback sits well and a slim upstand looks almost redundant, but the sockets are the problem, because they are set out to the developer's original kitchen and often land at odd heights or right on a joint line. Old walls lean back, and a tall panel shows it. Dot-and-dab plasterboard sounds solid and is hollow behind, so anything fixed through it has to hit a dab or a batten rather than a void. It is usually what pushes a job towards a 100mm upstand instead of a full-height panel, because an upstand rides what a panel exposes. Scribed, dubbed out, or set proud. Pick one.

03

Do you have trouble getting long pieces into South Bank kitchens?

A car that takes 2.4m on the diagonal will not take a three-metre worktop however it is stood, and there is no trimming it on the landing. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. It decides panel size before anything is cut. The goods lift has its own booking sheet, and a bay slot without a lift slot only gets the stone as far as the lobby. Upstands travel in a crate and can wait on the van, which gives some flexibility a full-height panel does not. A panel carried past a live lane gets a second pair of hands.

04

Do you get much worktop splashbacks & upstands work in South Bank?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop fabrication. That is a point about the buildings round here, not about the job. The quoting, the cutting and the fitting are identical here to anywhere else we work. Housings and integrated appliances are set out for a 38mm laminate top, so dropping to 20mm or 30mm stone changes the clearances and needs checking before anything is cut. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. The offcuts finish the room. Upgrading a builder-finish kitchen is mostly a swap, so the cost sits in the material choice rather than in the shape of the room. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Less to clean, for whoever cleans it.

05

What decides the price of a worktop in South Bank?

On a book-matched pair the halves are laid out so the mirror line runs down the length of the piece, and once that line is set the top cannot be turned round to suit anything else. The same shape decides where splashback pieces break, and a joint in a corner reads as a detail while one in a clear run reads as a mistake. Vein direction carries up from the top below. The stone is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted separately.

06

What do I need to sort out first?

Taped internal angles in plasterboard belly at the corner, so the run picks up a few millimetres over the last 300mm and a plan-angle mitre will not close. A tall panel that fits at the worktop will stand off the wall at the top unless the wall is dubbed out or the panel is scribed. The obstruction sets the joint, not the wall. Any socket you intend to move must be moved and re-plastered before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece of stone. Some doors in a building need a consent letter and some need nothing at all, so the first question is which arrangement applies here rather than which one is usual. Full-height panels need the wall made good first, which is another trade and another timescale. Two trades, two budgets, one drawing.

07

When do I pay for a South Bank worktop?

Material is quoted supply only and templating, fabrication and fitting sit on their own lines, so it is visible which part is stone and which is labour. Taking the old tops away is a line rather than an assumption, so it comes off if you do not want it. Plumbing, gas and electrical work are not in the figure, because we do not do them. Where a partition has been built off the floor screed rather than off the slab, it moves, and a mitre bonded across that corner is the first thing to open. Where the wall cannot be made good, setting the stone deliberately proud on a subframe with a shadow gap reads as a detail rather than a bad fit. Height follows the sill, not the plan.

08

What do drainer grooves add to the job?

The grooves sit inside the depth of the top with stone left either side, so a shallow run limits them. Where there is no room for a separate drainer, grooves are usually what gets specified instead. Developer carcasses are thin cam-lock chipboard, which is entirely adequate under laminate and wants bracing before stone. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. Making the wall good first is cheaper than working around it.

09

What if something breaks during the fit?

Chips at an edge or a corner are the usual form, because that is where stone is least supported. Most breakages happen on the carry, which is why the route is walked and measured before anything comes off the van. Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door. The lift has to be booked and blanketed before anything moves, and that booking needs to cover the old tops coming out as well as the new stone going in. It is usually the full-height panels rather than the tops that will not make the turn, and that only shows up when they arrive. That is agreed at template, not on fitting day.

10

How do you cut out for an undermounted sink?

A Belfast or butler sink has to be installed and at its final height before the template, because the stone is cut to sit on it. Undermount bowls are cut and polished in the workshop and dry-fitted to the stone on the bench before anything is loaded. A waterfall leg is a separate piece bonded to the top on a mitre, so the floor it stands on has to be level enough for that mitre to close along its full height. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. Behind an island there is no wall to hide against.
