Yes. The Garden Suburb houses are architecturally distinctive and largely conservation-protected, so kitchens are remodelled within the original service wing rather than blown out into big glazed boxes, and clients tend to want painted in-frame units with a warm-toned stone rather than anything stark. Beyond the suburb, the 1930s detached houses take conventional island layouts with runs of 3.5m or more. Where the front garden has been paved over completely the van stands close to the house, and the route in is still a standard front door. Leafy roads with long front drives and mature planting, so the van gets on the plot but the carry from drive to door is longer than average and often over gravel. A loading bay or a red route puts a clock on the unload, so the pieces come off in the order they will be fitted rather than the order they were loaded. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. Crates are sized to clear the same openings the stone does.

Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. Cut-outs are machined with the piece bedded down. Two walls each a degree out give an internal corner two degrees out, and the whole of that error lands in the mitre. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. A relief that deep changes how the piece is lifted. Supply only, material begins at £110 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on separate lines rather than as one number.

An owner paying for this directly tends to want the reasoning as much as the number, so a quote that explains why a join sits where it does is worth more than a cheaper one that does not. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Join positions belong to whoever signed. Describe the building when you book and the lift, the stair turn and any freeholder notice get built into the schedule rather than met on the day.

Each join is an item on the drawing, so the layout and the figure move together. A finished join is typically two to three millimetres, colour-matched and sanded flush. There are only ever a few legal positions, and the one taken is furthest from the light. An island carries its own edge detail all the way round, so a mitred 100mm apron on four sides is four mitres cut, bonded and polished before the piece ever leaves the bench. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. Apron mitres are bonded and polished before dispatch.

Granite tells you when the seal wants topping up: water stops beading on the surface and starts darkening it instead. A seal is not waterproofing. It only buys time to wipe a spill up. Marble is the one people underestimate. It is porous, like granite, and wants sealing. Ceilings are lower here than in the terraces of fifty years earlier, so wall units and a full-height panel compete for the same band of wall. Where a full length can come down the side and in at the back, the nest follows the slab instead of the building. What the wall does is on the drawing before the saw runs.

An external stair, a side return or a rear garden counts as carry and is measured the same way. A join added to get stone into the room is a different thing from a join added because the slab ran out, and the quote says which is which. The van gets close to the door and the stone comes off the tail lift onto a trolley, which is about the shortest carry we ever get. The maximum piece length is fixed at drawing stage and every join is placed over a cabinet gable from there. Load order is set by the order the pieces will be carried.

Undermount bowls are cut and polished in the workshop and dry-fitted to the stone on the bench before anything is loaded. If the sink or hob changes after the template, the drawing changes first and nothing is cut meanwhile. Nothing is cut out in the kitchen. Cutting a bowl on site is how worktops get cracked. Waterfall ends are cut in sequence off the length either side of the top so the vein carries down the leg, and that sequence is gone the moment a piece has to be recut. Every piece is drawn onto the slab before anything is cut, so the veining and the join positions are decided together rather than one after the other. Seams land over gables, never over a void.
