Consent for the work sits with the freeholder or the managing body, and getting it in writing first avoids a crew arriving to a locked door. Machining is permanent. If a later kitchen moves the sink, the grooves stay where they were cut. Which side of the bowl they go is about how you stand at the sink, and it is settled before cutting. The bowl position has to be settled before templating, since the grooves are set out from it. Where the kitchen has been opened into the living room the opening was trimmed with a steel, and a stub of the old wall was left standing at one end. Taking the old tops off is also the first honest look at what has been going on underneath them. Twenty years of settlement is measured, not argued with.

An upstand covers the gap where the worktop meets a wall that is not flat, which is its real job. Tiling and stone can meet, but where they meet is decided before the template rather than after. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the two pieces meet. The window cill clears a worktop by very little, which settles how tall the upstand under it can be before anyone has drawn a thing. Fixings into concrete go in with proper anchors, and the dust is contained rather than swept up afterwards. Where the wall bellies, the top is eased in against it.
