The housing stock
What we are usually working with in West Harrow
Crittall windows were swapped for plastic ones in openings that were made good rather than rebuilt, which leaves reveals that are neither straight nor equal. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the job is a day, and what makes it a difficult day is the building. Chipboard carcasses get bracing before stone lands on them.
A side alley and a back door mean most pieces go in whole, and it is the alley width rather than the front door that decides it. The junction between the old floor and the extension floor is where a run crossing it needs packing before stone goes on. What is behind the old splashback decides the new one.
The building stock is Edwardian terrace, 1920s semi and small 1960s block. That is why the same worktop costs differently two doors apart.
Access. Terraced streets with a few dropped kerbs and mostly free but crowded parking, and side alleys of around 750mm shared with the neighbour, which usually works for a slab on edge if the gate is removable.
There is nothing to visit in West Harrow. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
