The housing stock
What we are usually working with in West Putney
There is usually a cellar head or a hatch somewhere in the floor, and whatever sits above it has to stay liftable. The fitting day is planned backwards from all of it, before the first piece comes off the van. The room is swept and the offcuts leave with us.
Parking is permit-controlled and the roads are narrow with parked cars both sides. The gradient is the defining factor, driveways slope steeply, and moving a loaded trolley on a wet incline is a real hazard, so kit comes off the van at the top and goes down by hand. Sloping sites mean the ground-floor and garden-level rooms rarely share a datum, so set out from the finished floor in each room rather than assuming one worktop height throughout.
Internal walls are lath and plaster on studs with heavy framing behind, so a fixing finds either nothing at all or something very solid. What costs time is the distance from where the van can park to the door, often down a long drive or across gravel, so we plan the carry with enough hands and board the route where it crosses gravel or lawn. Old floors get packed, not argued with.
What the research records here is Large Victorian villa, Edwardian detached, 1930s semi and Conversion flat. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.
There is nothing to visit in West Putney. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
